my son is a big bowhunter and just nailed a nice 8 point yesterday in south texas. he wants me to get into it too (i hunt w/a 300 H&H mag rifle and a .44 mag revolver. he has a compound bow w/a 70 lb draw weight but due to recent lower back surgery i couldn't draw it back. i am going to go to ACADEMY soon and see if they'll let me try to pull back a 40 lber. i'm 60, 6'1', weigh 220, and b4 the surgery pulling the 70 lber would of been a joke. not now. any suggestions as to what to look/ask for? i have a nephew in colo. that bow hunts for a living and is in magazines and on TV but i guess hes too important now to answer my emails. are you listening DANNY? ya little shit. anyway, any suggestions appreciated. also-i need a range finder. been guessing for years and would like to know for sure the distances. THANKS

Crossbow? if it legal. That is a great alternative for people with your condition.

Call the manufacturer or shop you got it from and see what they can do for you. I got lighter limbs for a Destroyer for a hundred and change and the bow shop swapped everything over at no charge because I bought it from them.

I chose 60 lb limbs for my new Mathews Z7x. Not really into the baddest, fastest thing in the woods anymore.
Damn thing shoots laser beams anyway. I know they make an eZ7, designed specifically for easier, smoother
draw. I'm sure a knowledgable shop would be beter suited to answer your dilemma.

Personally, I think you can go higher than 40lbs, if you have the right bow. My suggestion would be to contact Rob Maitland of Maitland USA and talk to him. He has one of the smoothest cams on the market in the VTX cam system. Take a look at this video by an independent reviewer and watch him shoot a 70# bow while laying flat on his back (the only bow he's been able to do that with). I'm willing to bet that you could pull a Retribution VTX at 55-60lbs.

I have the Retribution with his VTR cams, which are the speed cams. They're almost as smooth as his VTX cams, but give more speed. If I had the money, I would be getting his 2012 Halo 31 and then decide which would be my backup bow and which would be my main bow. I'm not on his staff or anything. I am just incredibly pleased with the quality of his product and with his excellent customer service.
