Interested in the responses you will get myself. My son shot his first compound bow at Cub Scout camp this summer and is now showing an interest as well. I'mnot an archer, so I look at this as a chance for us to learn together.
FWIW, I was shocked at how light the youth compond bows we used at the camp were –– I fired them a few times myself and couldn't believe how little they weighed. |

Most of the youngsters start out with the Genesis compound bow. For those that are in the local JOAD (see if there is one in your area) they quickly progress to the Hoyt Ruckus if they stay on the compound route.

That Genesis is a good starter, especially if she hasn't shot before and you don't know if she will continue to show interest. If she gets hooked (which is very likely), there is a wide range of options available. Mission Craze, Mission Riot (new this year), Diamond Razor Edge, Parker has a couple, Bear Apprentice, PSE Rally, etc. A lot of it depends on whether she will be bowhunting with you and your bow budget. For our family, I wanted to get bows that the boys will be able to hunt with in a few years.
My boys have a Mission Menace (the Craze and Riot are better –– I see the Menace being dropped from their lineup) and a Diamond Razor Edge. The Razor Edge is better than the Craze, IMO, as it is quieter, faster, and has a smoother draw. My 3rd son (then-9y.o.) was able to pull the 30-60# limbs set at 30#, and has only gotten stronger since then. Next spring we're looking at moving my 2nd son from the Menace to a bow that he can hunt with –– either a PSE Rally, New Breed Archery Spawn, or maybe a Razor Edge. Personally, I'm hoping that the Spawn will fit his needs. |

My 10 year old daughter started with a Genesis and shot local 4H this past spring. She is hunting with a Hoyt Ruckus currently set at 36# and 25 1/2". This has been a great youth bow for her. It's adjustable from 25-50 pounds and up to 27". It's about $300 for the bare bow but considering she can shoot it for several more years I didn't mind spending the money at all. I will buy a left handed version for my son within the next year.
