Tactical Optics, Tactical Irons:

Striker fired pistols: Glock 17/34/35, S&W M&P 9mm. Striker fired pistols allow the shooter an extremely reliable and affordable pistol for use in 3 Gun. While the triggers are generally not as good as a 2011 style pistol, the lack of an external safety make these guys a good option for 3 Gun.

2011 Style Pistols in 9mm or 40 S&W. 2011 style pistols like those from STI or SVI give the shooter a level of precision usually unmatched by the striker fired pistol. However, cost and at times, reliability (either magazine or pistol itself) can be the downside to this platform.

Heavy Metal: Glock/Springfield Armory/ S&W pistols in 45 ACP. Striker fired pistols allow the shooter an extremely reliable and affordable pistol for use in 3 Gun. While the triggers are generally not as good as a 2011 style pistol, the lack of an external safety make these guys a good option for 3 Gun.

1911 style pistols in 45 ACP. The ideal choice for heavy metal. Excellent trigger in a tried and true platform make the 1911 pistol ideal for Heavy Metal competition.

Predator Tactical

After my top tier gun became a bolt action pistol, I'll never compromise again. Matt, Scot & Lynn have it down!

This has been a quandary that I have been trying to figure out myself here lately. I am not sure if I should build out a dedicated 3 Gun pistol with my CZ-75 in 9mm, get something else, or move to Heavy Metal Limited and use a 1911 that I am building for USPSA Single Stack use. Currently I am competing in Limited with the AR-15 but could move to HM Limited and use an AR-10. Here in Montana I have seen very few, if any, competitors in Heavy Metal Limited.

Corn,

The pistol that I regret selling the most is my Glock 34 that was a dedicated 3-Gun pistol for Tac Optics & Irons (non-USPSA matches). Get a good & low cost holster like a Bladetech DOH or a heck even like one of the cheap Uncle Mike's or Fobus and you've more than enough retention for going prone and running with the gun. This is the same pistol (and holsters frankly) that I used for USPSA Production shooting and did more than fair with it.

For HM, using a purpose built singlestack division gun is absolutely the right way to go. Holster and everything is the same as well as obviously the gun setup and you don't lose anything. Plus, the same pistol can be used in USPSA Limited-10 with obviously the purchase of 10 round mags. Some would say you're going to be "slow" because you're not running a race holster. I say that's garbage. I'm not Rob Leatham but can do sub 1 second draws from a Bladetech. For L-10, the only thing I'd add and it's a maybe is a magwell, but other than that roll with it.

Well I am no Julie Golob, Mike Seeklander, TGO, or any of the other outstanding shooters out there. I am just a low class shooter having a good time and using the equipment that I carry on a regular basis. It is hard not to start gaming it, but really I am there to just add some pressure to my 'practice'. I have been competing with ammo that is reloaded to my carry loads, which is way above 'PF' for the division.

Thanks for the response Rich. I was originally not going to put a mag well on the 1911, but I believe that I will do that now. Not one of those huge profile ones, but more like carry size.

I agree on the magwell. The Techwell is pretty awesome and the smaller ones aren't grotesquely huge, still provide a purpose for being there and don't profile. Definitely spring for the ones with the G-10 grips as they're made by VZ and are seriously sweet. The only downside to the Techwell is that the grips are proprietary to their magwell, but frankly given the selection of grips available and the price is not crazy, I'll pay the extra. They support the sport tremendously too, so I try to spend money with those that sponsor our events.

Team CZ has to have some input!

CZ offers 2 pistols which are excellent for 3 Gun Tac Division.

The first is the Shadow Long Slide which is a marriage between a CZ 75 frame and a Tactical Sport long slide. While I love my STI 2011 .38 Super 3 Gun pistol, the LS is just as competitive, has a better feeling grip and the magazines are substantially cheaper and do not need nuclear physicists to make them work. Plus I prefer the feel of a metal frame but that's just a personal preference. You do lose a couple rounds capacity compared to the 2011 at the present. BUT in my experience the LS is more reliable than a 2011 when shooting 9X19 (they're about even when shooting the 2011 is shooting .38 Super which IMHO makes the 2011 a more reliable pistol). This is my primary 3 gun pistol.

The other is the CZ SP01 which also makes for an excellent USPSA Production pistol. In 3 gun, you don't have to start hammer down so the SP01 can be shot single action. The heavy dust cover of the SP01 just soaks up recoil.

Oh, I can definitely show the love for CZ.. :) Currently I am shooting a stock CZ-75B. I think the SP01 Shadow would be fantastic, especially with the larger safety. The grip is fantastic too, better for me than the 75. If I do move to HM division, then outside of getting a CZ-97, I would be moving to the 1911 instead. Nothing like going in circles with all these choices.. :D

Cold, what 2011 brand and model pistol are you using? The gear page on the Noveske site lists a Glock 34, but I see you used a 2011 at the Ironman.

As another CZ 3-gunner, I'd also offer up the 75 Shadow as a good 3-gun pistol (as well as USPSA Production and IDPA SSP). A bit lighter than the SP01, no FPB, and a very nice trigger.

I've only done 2 3gun matches, but used my CZ75 from USPSA production. It worked ok, but I worried about the safety coming off while putting it in the dump bucket. I was looking into the Glock 24 and using it in USPSA limited as well as 3gun. Not sure if I will like the weight loss, but the additional rounds would be nice.

You all are causing me to want to pick up an SP01 or Shadow to play with. I have always been a Glock shooter, but got to play with a regular 75B and found it a very comfortable and instinctive pointer once I got over the different grip angle.

For what it's worth, I came to the CZ from 1911's. I knew too many people that had horrid experiences with EAA Witness pistols in the 90's to even consider one of that "type". My wife picked our first one, as the grip on the CZ 75 Compact felt very much like her full-size Beretta. I knew that the CZ was a mistake, and after the first jam-happy magazine we'd trade it in for the Glock 19 I'd been trying to get her to agree on.

3000 trouble-free, highly accurate rounds later, I was sold on the CZ 75. The Glock may have the benefits of being super-reliable, well-supported, and having a trigger pull that's the same for every shot, but I can't shoot a Glock anywhere near as well as I shoot my CZ 75. If you get a chance, spend some quality time with one. You may end up as another Czech-based 3-gunner. :)

fwiw, I shoot a 75 SA from the custom shop. The trigger is as good as all but the best 1911 style, will shoot better than i can and feels great in the hand. Whats not to like. Picked up 4 of the 18 round mags and am good to go. It is still a lot cheaper than a ST/SVI 9mm.

Problem right now is finding an SP01 (outside of a Phantom). I think that demand is stripping the supply just a tad bit. I would have never thought that rail would have made much difference, but after shooting a railed 1911, I believe it now. I suppose that I can satisfy my dilemma by just purchasing some 19 round magazines.. :)

Dont forget the CZ Tactical Sport in 9mm!
My TS has never jammed, 21+1 capacity, very accurate and better ergonomics than the SP01 (at least for me)

I own both SP01s and Tac Sports and for me the choice of which one to pick when I go to 3-gun matches is easy...

I have gone from a semi-custom G17 to my full house custom Para P16-40 and just today picked up a XDM 5.25 in 9mm.

I ordered the latter through Dawson Precision and it has the SA custom shop action job. This gun feels great and has a very nice trigger. I will get to the range with it sometime over the holiday weekend and report back.
