THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
All Ive got for the time being is a Remington 870 tactical. Its got a 20" barrel with out a choke and a factory extension that brings it to 7 rnds. So far I've opened up the loading port, put in a titanium follower, added a weaver rail(Im going to try and switch that to a standard 1913 rail), put on a 6rnd shot caddy that I modified a little, its got a fairly large red dot on it (Aimpoint sized) and still has the factory bead sight up front with nothing for the rear. I also had a Knox stock but it failed on me so now Ive got a cheap ATI collapsable stock since Im a little weary of useing another Knoxx.

So what can I do to improve this? Any recommendations for specific parts or mods to make it faster?

Thanks a lot

a barrel with screw in chokes would be on my list....would suggest a Light Modified choke for most matches....I don't shoot heavy metal, so am not qualified to comment about the dot scope...I shoot Tac Optics.... If you are an experienced wing shooter or clay bird experience, I normally suggest a factory 21" Remington turkey barrel with rib.... or if you have more rifle than shotgun experience a 21" rifle sighted slug gun with RemChokes... I tend to shoot my shotgun more like a large caliber rifle anyway... and am using the 10/22 flip up sights all the time

On dont have any experience wth non tactical shooting lol And my main expertise is with a rifle. Any suggestions on a specific barrel and sights. Can you not use optics in tactical? Is there an extension that will give me 8 or 9 rounds without going past the barrel? Also are there any mods I can do or buy to speed up or smooth out the pumping action?

tac optics allows one optic, and it ends up on the rifle, basically limited pistol, 9 round total limited shotgun, and rifle....my house 870 has a cut down 20" barrel and a factory Remington tube that will hold only 7 (and 1/2) and didn't want to shorten the spring... my Benelli M1S90 has a 21" barrel and Briley tube that holds division allowable 8 +1... get a quality magazine tube and good ISMI spring (13" longer than installed components for a 21" Benelli)

with the 870 lubed up, you will not need to worry about the ease of working the action, once the beeper goes off, your adrenalin rush will take care of that....the critical question is how you will carry your spare ammunition...learn to single load over the top directly into the open ejection port ( ala Cowboy action shooting) if you have to stand and shoot, and weak hand load into the tube if you can move...

I would suggest a 21' Remington factory fixed sighted slug barrel with factory screw in chokes....Nordic or Briley extension tube...ISMI spring

The spring I have now is the spring that came with the titanium follower which im pretty positive is by Nordic. Any suggestions for good rear irons? I can load over the top but the red dot gets in the way some times so its almost quicker to load from under into the chamber.

ETA:

Any links or anything to a 20" or 21" barrel with only the front sight and screw in chokes? I just looked and I cant find any.

Dustin, assuming you're thinking of using it for 3 gun since you're posting in the 3 gun forums, don't spend any more money on the 870. They are great shotguns, but unless you plan on shooting Heavy Metal, you will want an auto. I'm a pump gun guy, until this season it's the only thing I've used at major matches, but they are a pain in the ass. A new 21" barrel from Remington w/ run about $180, that's at least 1/4 of the way to affording a used Benelli.

Don't do anything more. You have a gun that has modifications that put it in open division.

I'd find a used Benelli Nova and add a 10 round Nordic Components mag tube and go shoot.

What mods put it in open? Is it just the optic because I plan on removing it and getting some Irons. What mods can I do and keep a shot gun (any shotgun) in tactical?

I'll look for used shotguns, for some reason that hasn’t occurred to me, but I'm buying parts little by little or doing the machining myself so it’s still cheaper but I don’t want to waste money either. I’d still like to find a barrel with a front sight though. The shot gun I want is the Benelli M4 mainly because I like the stock on it a lot but it’s not cheap. Can you get that stock for other Benellis?

Thanks for all the replies

Just the dot. A red dot and a ported choke or barrel get most guys.

Ok so for now I'm ok, thats good. Does anyone know where I can get a barrel with a front sight only and is there anything I can polish or machine to improve it?
