THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I am looking to ditch my S&W M4 Style rifle and get something I can get started in 3 gun with. The Stag 3G looks promising but I've heard you can build a better gun for cheaper. Can someone post an example of some parts/prices that come up to $1200 or less?

DPMS's 3G rifle is ok as well and a bit cheaper than stag, Not sure you are going to build a "quality" 3G rifle for much less than the DPMS, I mean as far as quality components....

Noveske Lower 150.00
Jp LPK 30.00

My thoughts on getting started:

Lower: $330

Locally purchased lower: $140 (with transfer fees)
Lower Parts Kit: $70
Bill Springfield trigger job on stock LPK parts: $60
A2 Stock assembly: $60

Upper: $1055

BCM 18" rifle upper with VTAC guards: $730
BCM BCG: $140
BCM charging handle: $25
Fixed Front and Rear sights $160

So this is almost $1400 for an iron-sighted rifle that you can continue to build on. Over time, you'd probably add an optic, a different stock, and a different trigger. But this would get you playing.

But my larger question is what is this rifle going to do that your M4-ish rifle wouldn't? Depending on where you shoot and what the ranges are, your existing rifle might be completely fine. Nothing wrong with shooting what you've got already for a while to either save up for what you really want, or to figure out what that "really want" really is.

Another option would be to buy the Stag or DPMS as just an upper and put it on your existing lower.

Damn good point, if the Larue is the rifle you want. Plus the Larue would come with a Geissele trigger.

Yup

However, if you're on a budget, and need to build-as-you-go, there are ways of going about it piecemeal that don't cost the $1400 at once. I think if you're willing to shop around a bit, consider some of the parts (stock, forend, etc) used, and don't mind being the guy always coming to the range with a new part for the next 9 months, it'd be possible to "pimp" the OP's S&W into a fine 3-gun platform say $250 at a time.

Not interested in pimping the S&W. I can sell it for $800+ and spend less than $400 out of pocket to upgrade to the Stag 3G. It would cost over $800 to make my gun match the 3G specs.

ACS Stock: $100
18" Stainless Barrel: $250+
15" Free Float Monolithic Handguard: $200
Gisselle Trigger: $230
Comp: $30+

Keep your lower half with M4 stock etc. and sell your M4 barreled upper (keep the bolt/carrier/charging handle for use in the new upper), or sell the whole rifle (if you can really get $800) and start with a new lower half of your choice. Other than the trigger, and the need for mags to drop free, the lower half brand has little impact on 3-gun performance.

Buy the following:

BCM 18" upper for $729
JP Match Trigger for $115

Add one of the following muzzle brakes: DPMS Miculek, JP Cooley Tactical, SJC Titan or Triangle Sports Rolling Thunder (say $50-100). There is nothing to be gained by looking outside these four.

Lastly, add an optic of your choice (say $300-1000) in a LaRue mount (say $110-220). Spend as much as you can on the optic and mount - it is better to spend $$$ on the best optics you can afford than to piss away a lot of cash on Gucci stocks, grips, rail systems etc. which I can assure you will give little/no performance gain.

The above approach could easily come in under your $1200 budget, and would be capable of winning any 3-gun match in the world if you had the ability.

Fantastic. Let us know how it shoots! I'm looking at buying the Stag 3G upper and would love to get an unbiased impression.

I'm not personally familiar with this storefront, but the Stag 3G upper is listed here for $700.

I believe he is the oldest or has the most positive feedback of any seller on AR15.com. He did not gouge anyone when Obama got into office like so many others. Pete is top notch and I have bought a bunch of uppers and kits from him. Buy with complete confidence. You could also ask him how much more it would be to make the buy a kit as he does that as well for any of the uppers he sells.

check out rainier arms uppers, they have a few that come in under 800 and you wouldn't have to buy a new lower, just upgrade a trigger maybe. I've got a couple of their upper and they are awesome.

I saw a sweet Rainier handguard in the Samson manufacturing booth at SHOT. It's very similar to the one that Samson builds for Stag Arns but with a different pattern of cooling holes cut into it. Samson makes done cool Shituff!

In case you are still contemplating this I can tell you that Pete is in fact a first rate guy and you can buy with complete confidence. I ordered one of the Stag 3GH upper from him a week or so ago and had it in matter of days.

I now have my Burris XTR 1-4 scope on top and one of my a trusted lowers (with its JP FCG parts) underneath. I've shot it just enough to get it zeroed and do some barrel break in (if you think that is needed). I expect to do more testing and tuning this week.

This is a "cheap" 3 gun rifle. It's my 3 gun rifle because it's what I shoot in 3 gun. The accuracy isn't what you'll get with a custom dedicated rifle but it's almost always good enough. Where the accuracy hurts me the most is not getting the first shot hits on the 400 & 500 yard steel. A BDC would be nice but I have my hold-overs down pretty well now.

It got a lot of laughs on the Arfcom side when I called it budget. Everyone was comparing it to their striped down Model 1 Sales builds.

DPMS AP4 1/7 chrome lined $775
Nikon Monarch African 1-4 $279
Buris PEPR mount $80
Chip Miccormick single stage match trigger $175
YHM Phantom Brake (not flash hider) $25
Magpul carbine hand guard $29
Magpul BUIS $50 (don't really need but helps cool factor)
USGI web sling Free
USGI mags Free

TOTAL (ready to shoot) $1413

Unfortunately not. The next time I'm free for one of the OKCGC matches is in October. That's on the calendar though. Gotta find another local saturday match that's on a different weekend.

Entry AR for cheap

This article is geared more toward the "new guys" who are looking for their first AR.

And I have no doubt that any top level shooter could "wreak havoc" over most other 3 gunners with one of the "starter carbines" described.

I know this thread is old but I figured I would post my cheap build anyway.

I started with a carbine and decided I wanted something a little better suited for 3 gun. From the carbine I kept both receivers, parts kit, trap door, buffer assembly and forward assist. I sold everything else off the gun. This is what I added.

-20" Hbar (Bought brand new off gunbroker) $90
-Nordic XL Hand Guard $100
-Nordic Comp $50
-DPMS BCG (From Nordic) $110
-Rifle Length Gas Tube $10
-Sadlak Lo Pro Gas Block $27
-JP Trigger Spring Kit $10
-UBR Stock, Traded a TLR2 for this
-Burris Tac30 w/ PEPR Mount $400

After selling the barrel, stock, etc from the carbine I only spent a couple hundred bucks on this set up minus the optics. This is by no means the best set up but I'm also not the best 3 gunner. I enjoy the sport and bought what I could afford. Sorry for the bad pic.

Ruger Mini-14 $700
Nikon 1-4 dangerous game scope - canned from the DPMS above
Karsten cheek rest - $54
Smith Enterprise muzzle brake $79
Haven't got mags yet because I don't want to go to jail.

Total $833.

+1

I put a Stag 3G upper on my existing tried and true lower (with its JP FCG). After shooting it all year I’ve been very happy with the results (and the price). The one change I did make was swapping the Stag factory comp for a Miculek comp which made the gun shooter flatter

I made it most of the year in TacOps (one match) and Tac Irons (with Aimpoint M4s) with this rifle.... Accuracy was great, but silencer mount wasnt quite as good as a competition brake.
Uploaded with ImageShack.us" />

I ran this for heavy optics....it did well at Fallen Brethren and was my strong suit there......shotgun was NOT tho.
Uploaded with ImageShack.us" />

I now run this gun and have returned the above two guns to hunting/long range duties. Homebuild with Mega receivers....

Uploaded with ImageShack.us" />

Bushnell 1-6.5x24 and LaRue mount have been swapped to it for a final club match this month, and the rest of next year as I think I'm done with heavy and irons.
