Going to my first match and wondering when the use of slugs would be required?

Have this on my Reminton 1100. Would it be considered a speed loading device?

When the course specifically requires them.

That is not what is referred to as a speed loader.

Slug targets are identified in the stage description.

That part is not considered a "speed loading device". It does not assist in loading 2 or more shells at a time into the shotgun. Detachable magazines or  tube-type speed loaders that load 2 or more shells at a time are what they are prohibited in all divisions except open.

Slugs are used very infrequently.  They will tell you on the walk thru of the course of fire what targets are slugs if any.

Jesse,

You need to come shoot more NTMG monthly matches.  Jeremy is making slugs a routine part of every match.  We are usually shooting 2 to 8 slug targets per match.  He's thrown in a few "buckshot only" steel targets too.

This variation really makes you think when you are loading your shotgun.

I few examples of "slug targets" we see on our range:

- 100 yard steel IDPA target
- 50 yard IDPA cardboard target
- 30 yard IDPA cardboard target set on a pendulum that is triggered by a drop target.
