I will be in in hog country for work and the only guns we'll have will be 16" 5.56 carbines. We'll have some thermal and NVG, so we've got that covered, and I know that any good round will get the job done if put in the appropriate place. That said, we'll have a plentiful stock of M193 and M855, are those enough for southern hogs? Is there a better round for hogs that I should get? I have no issue with getting better rounds, just not sure what to get and I'm not a hog hunter so I want to avoid the media hype.

Any other animal in North America I'd know what to use, but hogs can be tricky to kill I've heard.

TIA.

If you're wanting to shoot a large boar you plan to mount or a small sow you plan to eat and want them to keep from running off too far pick up some Barnes solids like the 55 gr TSX. If you plan on going the eradication route and will be sending as much lead down range as quickly as possible then plain old fmj's will be fine.

62 gr. Fusions or 64 gr. Powerpoints placed 2" behind and 2" down  the ear will DRT everytime a big ole Florida hog. Hell, any soft point will work

62gr Fusions or any of the TSX loads are perfect.

This. Especially since most hunting is done within the frag range for XM193.

Most important with 5.56 is barrel twist rate for the projectile selected. You want it accurate, but not spinning too fast.

I have less hit and runs when using 5.56 and i've tried most calibers suitable for Hogs. Most of my kills are running shots too.pew pew pew

I've killed many hogs with 77gr Black Hills.

If you have time and can buy whatever you want, get a load using Barnes TSX bullets.

Whatever you shoot best.

55 gr. Vmax at approxemently 140 or so yards.

40 gr. Vmax at around a 100 yards.

40 gr. Vmax at around 200 yeards.
But I like 60 gr. and heavier bullet for people that are new to hog hunting. I kill more with a .22 pistol in the trap than I do any other caliber. Shot placement!

Biggest I have ever killed was with a 42 GR hollow point ... Size does not matter if you put it in the ear hole.

How well do the Hornady GMX compare with the Barnes TSX?

70 grain Barnes TSX @ 125 yards on 408 pound hogs from HK 556 SBR, DRT.

This,

though I regularly use 55gr gold dot and hit them in the spinal cord, which means they cant you know...use their spine. Its not ideal but I'm lazy and don't care to retrieve the pests if they get away.
