I'm looking to go on my first hog hunt later in the year so I'm looking for ammo to use in my 16in AR.  I've read good things about the Barnes tsx rounds but seems hard to find in a factory load.  Any suggestions for an off the shelf round?

We've been using Fusion since loosing our 6.8 TTSX connection and are having good results; good enough anyway.

M855.

I prefer they go run off and die somewhere else.

Been using Winchester 64 grain power points for 10 years. They work.

No joke! I double tapped a 125lber a couple nights ago with m855. Ran about 30 yards further on my side of the fence. Luckily nature did its thing in about 18 hours.

I would use Nosler Defense .223 64gr bonded soft point. I believe it's the same bullet as the popular Winchester 64gr Ranger load.

Less than a minute video about the 64gr bullet----->

I don't know anything about hog hunting, but i would be tempted to just use plain old wolf steel case, these bullets are tough.

Aim for the red dot and ammo will not really matter that much.

shot placement is key. I use to shoot pigs like I'd shoot a deer. I once shot a pig in the "typical kill zone" with a .300 winmag and it ran over 100 yards deep into the brush gushing blood before dying. They are tough animals. I now hunt them with 69 to 77 grain .223 and use the behind the ear or neck shot. I have yet to chase one ever since. Get bullets that you can shoot your best groups with and use this shot if you want to drop them where they stand.

Good ole xm193 and shoot them in the neck. That is all you need. Don't waste your money on expensive ammo.

Try taking a neck shot on 4 or 5 hogs out of a group of 10 or 12 that are running at top speed while ducking in and out of brush and going up and down over terrain, and do it really fast before they get away...

In short, anything from M193 to 77gr 318 clone....FMJ works great.  I've had good results with 70gr BTHP match ammo.  Hit them in the head or neck and they drop like a sack of bacon.

See my group pic just above?  I took 3 of those, my son 2.  I let him shoot first to ensure he got at least 1 good shot.  The 3 I took were all on the run, changing directions.  All 3 were neck shots at ~50 yards.  Sight picture, lead, breathe, squeeze.

Nice shooting.

My point is that a head/neck shot isn't always available or an easy shot.  I have a few places where you can catch them across a field for 300 yards, and I'm not nearly a good enough shot to make a head shot at that range.  Heck, I'm probably 50% on making contact on runners past 200.

I don't really care about putting a hog down fast, so I usually either shoot something cheap or some new bullet that I want to try out, but if I want kill one where he stands I'm dang sure not going to use M855.

I'd be surprised if 50% of the guys on here could make a head/neck shot at 50 yards offhand on a standing pig.

Any long distance DRT shots at 200 to 100 yards? Or at that distance is it not enough?

If you can put a 55gr or heavier bullet in the center of the neck it will get the job done at 300.
