I'm looking for a 6.5mm round to shoot hogs with. I reload, so my options are only limited by current projectile availability. Where I hunt I can reach out to 1200 yards on paper, but would probably only take a pig up to 500-600y if conditions are right.

I would like to use 140 berger vld hunting or 140 amax but I can't find either atm.

I currently have 142 smk, 123 amax,  130 berger vld target, and 140 berger vld target.

Does anyone know of anything available right now that would be better on hogs from 0-600 yards? I've heard/read the 142smk may not expand reliably at distance.  Or, what would you use that I currently have on hand?

Thanks. I'll try those out when they come back in stock (along with many other 6.5mm hunting bullets). Checked a few places and they're all out.

I wouldn't hesitate to scream the 123 AMAX at them.

The Hornady 123 grain SST gets good reviews out of the 6.5 Grendel.  The A-Max has a tendency to come apart at high velocity on close range shots.  The SST stays together better as it is designed for hunting.  The 120 grain Barnes have been very effective and will be a very penetrative round.  Selway Armory usually has good prices and get good reviews.

I shot a boar with a 142 smk, good shot, didnt do a damn thing. No blood, no nothing.

Another guy shot it a month later, when they skinned it had a bunch of damage. Got pictures from the guy that shot it.

I knew I should have shot it in the head, but wanted to take the "safe" shot.

Ill be using either a 130 Barnes, 129 SST, or 140 SST. Just need to work up some loads and see what shoots.

Out of what you have, 123 AMAX.

Thanks for the help guys. I found some 140 sst. So, I bought a few hundred to see how they do. On paper it seems to be a great little projectile.
