I'm sorry if this is has been asked before, but I'm just joining late in the game.  I was building a RECCE rifle but saw some videos of hog hunting and absolutely fell in love.  Now I want to turn this project in a hog hunting rig but keep the AR in 5.56/.223.  So my question is, what ammo is good to take down a big critter like a hog?  The 5.56/.223 cartridge is a small caliber so I would be more interested in heavier grains unless there are other lighter bullets that can perform better.  I have been shooting only surplus mil spec ammo and don't have experience with other ammo.  For hog hunting, what ammo in 5.56/.223 would you use?  Thanks.

Barnes TSX offering or a 62gr soft point like the Fusion MSR.

This. I used a 52gr barnes TSX last year to take a white tail with my SCAR16. I had my reservations about the .223 for deer but it more than did its job. The heart was turned into a flat blown up peice of meat.

Thanks guys.  I have read about the Barnes TSX in the ammo FAQ, and it performs pretty well but wasn't sure if it would be enough for a big hog.  I have a 16" inch barreled upper to keep the rifle light with adequate velocity for the cartridge.  Are there any others?

Velocity has a quality all its own.  I've shot all sorts of things with AR's. They kill, pure and simple.  Use decent ammo and shoot what you'd like...

IIRC Silver State Armory has some 70 TSX which are pretty spectacular.

I'm glad that is good enough to be effective.  I know shot placement is key but I need all the help I can get with other choices out there.  I have a decent amount of M193 and M855 but reserve that for two legged critters.

There used to be a several hundred page sticky on this topic, but it seems to have disappeared.

I've heard of a handful of guys using regular 55gr fmj stuff, some even use wolf. But I would go with a heavier and sturdy bullet. Barnes is a good option, and I have had good results (not on pigs) with 64gr winchester power point. I know SkyPup uses 77gr or 80gr OTM bullets too, and he's killed more pigs with 223 than anyone I know of.
