Me and my family are planning a big move from Florida back to the panhandle of TX closer to where im from(Childress)and i plan on doin some MAJOR hog hunting once we finish our move and get settled in. I was never all that interested in it growin up even though our farm was crawling with them like most but since i built my own AR and ive done more research about it im all about givin it a shot....the only thing i havent seen alot of is people just leaving the hogs they shoot....i dont know if its illegal to do somethin like that even tho they are nuisance animals and free game or if most people are more conservative when it comes to hunting hogs.......im not interesting in cleaning and cooking them, im only really interested in doin my part to "control" them....obviously it happens, i know the helicopter hunters at the end of the day dont go round up all the little piggies theyve knocked off that day lol..........i also plan on doin some coyote hunting so i guess you might also concider this baiting for coyotes. Any info would be greatly appreciated

Priority #1 Kill pigs
Priority #2 Eat pigs

Now listen, I've let lots and lots of hogs become fertilizer. Generally because I have better things to do, like killing more hogs. However, at least once you your life you need to hack a leg off of one of those guys and then cube it up and make a brown gravy with it. Or a nice roast. You will find you leave fewer of them behind. :)

I use a fair amount for coyote bait but I eat them too. I just have it all ground into sausage and it's great. I don't gut or skin them and can have the quarters and backstraps out, meat off the bone and on ice in 45 minutes. Still leaves bait for the coyotes too. If you don't get a good clean kill with the first shot, sometimes the boars will piss all over themselves as they do their 'dirt dance.' They will smell so bad you won't want to get near them. I think it's more fun than deer hunting.

So what's the law on donating the meat to charities, shelters and such? Seems a shame with so many poor people in the US going unfed to just leave the hogs. I'm sure there's some bureaucratic committee some where that's can list a dozen reasons why it's just not possible but f*** em. I know that hogs caught live in many states are donated with meat processors either donating their work or the trappers doing the processing themselves. Just doesn't seem right with the exception, of course, where retrieving the hog in time to assure it's safe to eat can't be done.

I'm not starving by any means but my smoker cries when there's no piggies in it. Hell, someone could bring me some hog and I'll smoke it and donate it. Of course being in OKC makes that a bit difficult logistically.

Just smoked a pork butt yesterday, store bought, and it's so good you'd swear it was unicorn meat lol.

A friend of mine with takes them to a processor, pays the fee and then drives it over to a charity for the homeless. I never said anything to him, he has good intentions and gobs of money, but I'm not sure the charity actually uses it. I can tell you that any charity (in FL anyway) that gets $$ from any .gov establishment will throw it away.

Edit: Every state and locale may very well have different criteria for acceptance.

If you are going to hunt someone else's land, ask them where they want them dumped. Slice them open on the quarters and the buzzards will clean them up quick. We have one place on the ranch by a big dead oak where we dump all dead animals. It's like the buzzard sonic drive-in.

We usually just pick and choose, also depends on the time of the day or if we gotta be somewhere.

Nothing could be further from the truth, no one is starving in the us that doesnt want to. Just take a look at the bottom of your check.

Wrong...

Go spend some time in Appalachia or just about any other rural area where industry has gone bust before assuming that your taxes and mine are the miracle cure to poverty in America.

No Shit! You don't have to go to Appalachia. No, they aren't all black. I can tell you that there are MANY kids right here in the Tampa Bay area that get nothing to eat except the free breakfast and lunch they get at school. It's not the kids' fault but they are still hungry. Bad choices by the parents (usually only one), loss of jobs, you name it. My heart doesn't bleed for most, but the kids don't deserve to go hungry. I guess Texas is Nirvana.....dumb ass..........

I had heard that a hog over 150lbs is not fit to eat. Well let me tell you that is far from the truth. During my Texas hunt Theredgoat and I talked about how he takes care of the animal after the shot. First he said if he does not have an unlimited supply of clean running water he lets em lay. in other words you need to get em cleaned and cooled as soon as possible. We killed an estimated 250lb boar and when we walked up on him I had serious doubts about his theory. He smelled BAD I mean like he had been rolling in his and 200 other hogs piss and crap, We killed the boar at 0230 and had him home by 0430. Since it was night it was much cooler than the days even in early March. The first thing we did once we got him home was rinse him off for about 20-30 minutes, or until the water ran clean. This removed most all the smell but there was still a funk. Next he instructed us to be very careful to have a dirty and clean hand. Dirty hand for pulling on the hide and the clean one for knife work. If we contaminated the clean hand or the knife we were to wash it off before continuing. Once we got the skin off we rinsed for another 20 minutes. By the end of this the meat had a sweet smell and no evidence of the previous funk was noticeable at all. We cut him up and each took a 50lb ice chest home with us. I was still a bit skeptical and did not try any for a couple of months. I finally cooked up some ribs. WOW was I surprised. Though I would not call it tender it was not tough either and tasted better than any pork I had eaten before. If it was cut super thin it literally melted in my mouth. I am sold on wild pork. like I said it has a different consistency but still very nice flavor and well worth taking the time to do it right.

Now if it were in the heat of the day and we were more than an hour or so from a cool water source I would probably let em lay. They are an invasive species and a total nuisance. I would not feel bad dropping a few to feed the yotes and buzzards.

This is the method I use when I want to keep the meat, it works very well. I don't have running water on my hunting property and I am usually there a couple days. Keep plenty of ice on hand and I've never had meat spoil.

I don't think twice about leaving pigs lay. If you want to to clean em and eat em cool. If you don't, I won't think less of you.

I don't know what kind of hogs you have in the US but the meat we take from the hogs we kill over here has as much flavour as deer but is as fat as pork. Heck, it is pork!

I wouldn't leave them lie unless I was on a vegetarian diet.

I would have no problem with leaving them if that is what you want to do, but you might check with your buddies, they may be willing to clean and eat them. I shoot quite a few hogs each year and stock my freezer as well as some of my buddies freezers. At any rate, kill as many as you can as they are over running us here in Texas and are known to kill and eat other small animals as well as bird eggs.
