I have to believe that the worst drought in Texas' recorded history was a factor. I think our methods have improved, and the use of NV and thermal is still increasing our harvest numbers. |

the drought sure did change things...Ive been getting on them on the Sabine river EVERY trip...its like they are still hanging around the BIG water.
My calls for hunts has slowed way down for now also. |

Nice Kills HTR!
I agree with dehog. I regularly hunt with a warden in this area, and the calls for hog problems have went down quite a bit due to the drought. However, if the rain continues it should bring the populations right back up. In the last 3 days I've had 15 inches at my house.
I usually kill 100-150 pigs a year off of the place I hunt out of Navasota, however work has kept me away much of the year. Should be a slaughter when I get the dozer in there and clean up all the downed trees. Unbelievable, how many huge oaks are dead after last years drought. |

We have been in a huge drought here in Florida too and two tropical storms dumped 22 inches of rain on us and the aquifer sucked it all up, however the hog action has skyrocketed in the 2-3 weeks since we finally got some rain.
And yes, the drought is murder on the large oaks, just awful what it does to them, and then all the lightning from the storms to top it off....sad. ![]() |

A little fairy told me he's about to get some help learning how to scratch out some coyotes on the property too, that will certainly improve his deer herd....
Coyotes are allot of fun to hunt and very difficult to to call in and take down since they have such excellent senses and speed. Should be an additional plus adding predator hunting too! Have fun and have at it! |

Have fun and have at it! Indeed, this is true. However, this is not a pursuit that is "new" to us. Though this was not a nighttime kill, it was shot at 250 yards, with a Cutting Edge Raptor 80 grain, lathe-turned, ballistic tipped-hollow point prototype bullet which I am helping CEB develop right now. This is the most accurate 6.8 bullet I've ever fired, period. Velocity from a 19" bolt gun was 3202 FPS! I will have a report on the bullet, once we get the final broach depth and petal profile decided.

Damn, sure wish I was there to get in on some of the action myself, you guys are having way too much fun!
I am sure that you will pick up on some good predator hunting techniques and equipment, it is more of an art than a science but the more you know the better it gets. It looks like you have the predator killing techniques already under control.... the velocity on that 6.8 bullet is amazing too. |
