THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
My 5.45x39 build is finished, and time to start a second. Thoughts are quad rail, or partial quad rail. Vortex Strikefire/Sparc or PA M3/Microdot, magnifier?, flashlight. I don’t see night vision in the immediate future, but having the NV setting on the optic would be nice if the possibility arrives. Seems that with the right color light and optic/laser people are doing pretty good without it. I just wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts. Will be used in Central Texas, day and night.

RDS or scope?
Flashlights? Green, red, IR, diffuser?
Laser?
Quad rail?
Sling?

You could buy a Sig 556r. I think they come with a quadrail. If not the rails are cheap or you could get rail adapters for the stock hand guards.

I think skypup uses one for hogs.

I was gonna say no to the 556, until I just found out that it was now available in 7.62x39. I don't know if I want to try a different platform, and I don't have any AK mags.

Well if you want something in 7.62x39 you can always try a Ruger Mini-30. They are getting more expensive but you can find some used for not too bad if you look around. I know you are talking about building one but that is an option.

Think about it again. Early report show lots of issues. Maybe they fixed it.

I have a Vortex Strikefire bright red only and it has a night vision setting which works real well with a friend's PVS-13. I considered a 7.62 X 39 but went with a 6.5 Grendel which basically uses the same parent case.

Since you are in Texas, build a Blackout and get a can.

Here is mine. It is presently using a lot of parts from my 9MM until my stamps come in for the ARF.com billet lower and Wilson Whisper can.

ARFCOM.....Time well wasted.

If you REALLY want an AK-AR, I would wait for RRA to release their AR47.
I have seen some of it - looks like they cut out the front magwell area for banana mags from AKs to fit into an AR.
Dunno if drums will work.

I have wanted an AK for a LONG time, but have never gotten one. This may be the crossover that gets me there!

I have this 7.62x39 upper on order from Model 1 Sales. It's primary purpose will be clearing out the hogs on my land. I'll let y'all know how she shoots when it comes in.
And you so very, very, very very, very very, fucked. Not just a little fucked, but a big old 55 gallon drum of concentrated, industrial strength, monitored by EPA and has to have a HAZMAT team on standby fucked.

I sold all but one x39 mag with the upper I just sold, but I don't see a reason to pick up another kind of firearm, unless it will be the same as my father's Saiga, and more accurate.

No WTF for me. No can in the future, so no reason to go for it. We don't shoot enough .223, have we shot 223 yet? Not sure.

How far would you feel comfortable shooting with the Strikefire? Would you consider a magnifier necessary equipment?

This is where I am at right now. The x39 is firmly planted in the family. Few SKSs, few K of ammo, 12X gr HP, 154 SP, some "AP” stuff, etc. But, the 6.5G will be much more flexible Ammo is more, but looking at FPE, the 123 gr. Hornady 6.5 has more than the 123 gr. Hornady x39 It will also go much farther than the x39 will. That said, what to do with the ammo we have? Bring the bubba`ed SKS, and hope the scope mount stays zeroed? Buy a x39 pistol for when I have to go find em, and keep a 18+” Grendel for the tree stand? ETC, etc.

The upper I have been looking at is the M1S Carbine. Thinking maybe Preban so I can get a standardized thread on it. Seems Rguns is selling rebadged M1S stuff (5.45 AR from Rguns has M1S parts all over it. Don’t know their thread pitch, but I think that I could piece together something nice with their fluted barrel, quad rail etc if they would ever contact me.

Well, my M1S upper came in late last week and I had the opportunity to get it out to the range and sight it in. This thing rocks! The range I was at had everything farther than 25yds closed so I at least got my NV scope sighted in at 25yds. I've heard good things from the C Products 10 round mags so that's what I now own. She fed flawlessly and consistently clover leafed my shot groups.

I'm gonna try to get out and do some hog hunting with it in the next few weeks but my schedule is booked a ways out. I can't wait to sling some lead at a hog with this thing!

The RRA AR-47 and Sig 556R both look like great options right out of the box. The Sig made a list of top 10 Hog rifles by Brian McCombie of Outdoor Life.

If I had a PVS 14 and my Strikefire I think 150 yard shot would be easy with the NV. My Strikefire came with a 2X magnifier and for the money I like it. With my Polytac light and strikefire I think I could hit a decent size hog out to at least 70 yards and on a bright moon lit night probably a lot farther. I haven't tried any of the lasers people are using for hog hunting.

Still stuck between the x39 carbine/pistol and the Grendel, and a scope/red dot.

FYI, mag length could be an issue, depending on how you hunt. The 30-round Cprod/ASC 7.62x39 mags are long, and those were the only mags that I found to run reliably in my factory Armalite 7.62x39. The 10-round 7.62x39 mag that came with the gun never ran reliably for me (though it does run well in my Grendel!). The full-capacity, 25-round Grendel mags are shorter than the 'x39 30s, and you can get 14-round mags if you want shorter yet. For hunting from a stand mag length probably doesn't present an issue, but if you're in the weeds, that gigantic 30-round 7.62x39 mag might be a hindrance.

Obviously, the 7.62x39 will be cheaper for you to shoot as compared to the Grendel. I pay right around a buck a pull for the Hornady 123 grn Amax. I reload for less, but man, it sure hurts when you dump a full mag and can't recover the brass.

I know you said no to the 300 Blackout, but the round does have slightly less recoil than both the 7.62x39 and the Grendel, all three from a 16" tube.

I put one together years ago, before the Blackout, using an AR Performance barrel and their superbolt. When they offered a lighter "scout" profile, I sold the old barrel and bought the new. I've shot a few hogs and a few deer with it and am very pleased. I use the C Products 10 round magazines, but the ASC 10 rounders should do fine.

I do not suggest the YHM phantom flash hider. It added a lot of weight and length. I switched to a smaller, lighter birdcage flash hider.

This year I added an inexpensive laser and a good light. I had to track a hog into the woods last night and wished I had not left it at home like an idiot!

I like keeping it simple. Colt 14.5" upper, Ameetec lower, Gemtech can. I have DPMS frankenmags that run great, and also some carefully sorted and tested CP mags.

Got it narrowed down to a 16" middy, 16" carbine, and an 11" pistol. All in the same price range. THoughts on gas, manuverability, etc?

What about a Rock River Arms AR/AK hybrid called the RRA LAR-47? All the awesomeness of an AR with the ability to use AK mags and shoot the 7.62x39.

Brandi, right now it's a Alpha shooting sports middy, Sota Arms carbine, or the used Bushy that I am thinking really hard about getting right now.

Took some time after lunch today and pieced this together. These are the three (with a fourth to be listed later if Sota decides to do a pistol length) i am looking at right now. Leaving out the coatings, I have priced them to the closest I can apples to apples.

Bushmaster

For $700 (slightly used) I get nickel boron coated parts (not sure on price), $143 worth of magazines, $20 firing pin, and $100 bolt that may or may not be necessary. Extra extractors, firing pin.

$700 + $100 forearm + $30 lo-pro gas block = $830

Alpha Shooting Sports

For $525 used for 400 rounds. Stainless steel and coated parts. Lopro gas block with adjustable gas. MOE handguard that I can resell for something. $20 firing pin. $40 Kies compensator. 1 10 rd magazine $20ish. Meaning catching it up to the Bushmaster would be about $120 or so for mags, and I can make some of that back by selling the compensator and the MOE handguards

$525 + $120 magazines + $100 forearm = $745ish - MOE forearm sale - Kies if I want to sell

Sota Arms

$400 for regular freefloat, $510 for Stainless freefloat quadrail. Quadrail will be about $100 to replace with what I want for the other rifles. No magazines that I know of, so +$143 to equal the Bushmaster, and Bolt carrier group coating, whatever that will cost.

$510 + $143 for magazines + $20 firing pin = $673ish + coating

(Forearm)

YHM lightweight quadrail is $91 for carbine and $102 for midlength/specter

YHM Customizable is lighter, and $71+S/H for carbine and $75+S/H for specter

From Brightflashlights in the industry section.
