Thanks in advance. if ya have had luck with using scents with deer, ya could try using the same tec-neek for hog's... i'd find place were thar be fresh hog sign, put scent out, move back , if got elevated tree stand set it up, most leaves are gone an can see good distance, kick back an relax.. get most of my hog's easing threw the woods threw the thick stuff.. pushed alot of hog's out around downed tree's... if ya not out thar, ya not gonna see em... |

I always wanted to put a real sow in heat in a small trap and hunt over that.

So far, peanut butter has been the most effective scent I have used.

I use corn, kool aid, and diesel in my pig pipes.

About 20 years ago I was bow-hunting one afternoon…not far from a large pen trap I had set for hogs. The trap was simply cattle panels fastened to trees in a grove of planted pines and had a large wooden door with a trip wire in the rear of the trap. A little before last light…I shot a large doe and waited about 15 minutes before getting down to go and look for her. Just before dark….I heard the door on the trap slam shut. Figured I would check it on my way out to get my truck and retrieve the deer, but had planned to leave whatever was in there overnight, since I already had a deer to deal with. Back then…the small “mini-mag” maglights were popular and that is all I had with me to make my way out. Anyone that has one knows they weren’t much better than having a candle with you, but such was “mini” flashlight technology back then. When I got to the hog trap I walked up to it and shone the light into the area. I could plainly see a sow (about 150 lbs.) towards the back of it. Just then….I heard a loud “WOOF/GROWL” and shined my light that direction just in time to see a large hog dig in and make a run at me! Since I was standing right next to the cattle panels I hopped up on one and grabbed the small pine it was stapled to. I yelled at the hog “Get out of here……..” but he was already leaving, just walking away. I could see it was boar even with my dim flashlight. I waited a bit and when I didn’t hear anything else, I made my way back to my truck and got my deer. The next morning when I went to go get the sow, a boar (probably the same one) was near the trap again…but ran off when I got close with the truck. The sow’s genitals were swollen…indicating she was in full blown estrous, the reason for the boar being there no doubt. Never went to the woods again with a mini flashlight….and learned how powerful an attractant a real sow in heat could be. |
