I'm in VA where there are quite a few differences in landscape and possible size of hogs, but I use a 12 gauge with slugs. A friend uses a .223 with 62gr Barnes, and he doesn't have any problems with them going down. I use a shotgun because it's pretty thick around here, and the hogs are never that far away.

Are you looking for just a bullet (reloading component) or factory loaded ammunition? For bullet, I've had a lot of luck with the 65gr Sierra pro hunter.

thanks for the responses. He has a 1:9 twist so I think I can go as high as a 69 gr. bullet according to what I've just read. I'm looking to reload so any components you use would be appreciated. Also, I'd look at buying the ammo as well but just prefer to reload it. Let me know what has worked for you.

There's another guy in here from TX that uses just 55gr FMJ and says he plants them with those bullets. They'll penetrate the vitals due to design, but for more effective "drop them in their tracks" performance, aim for the neck/shoulder junction.

62 tsx 64 gr power point 55gr sp All these work fine. Or behind the ear not a head shot. In front of the shoulder to the ear there usually Drt. |

While I agree the .223 is on the small side, when you have no easy option, then do it with the best of the bunch. The TSX70gr is about as good as it will get. I have the 62gr Fusion, they work okay as do the tsx62. The guys have covered placement for you. My only other advice??? It's an AR. Put 3 holes in whatever is in front of the rifle. 3-62gr bullets= 186gr. That's heavy, and hard to overcome............
 A pair of blown lungs, plus a liver shot out and a hip shattered means a whole lot less chasing the animal.

We use Hornaday 223 75g BTHP. We killed well over 500 hogs and a few dozen deer on cull permits. We get them for $450 per 1000 so you can afford to shoot them a few times!! We target practice with the same bullets we hunt with. We shoot them in the neck and tru the shoulders, Texas heart shots, any which way they present... NASTY bullets. Destroys hogs under 150 and will kill any hog that walks..The average hog is 60-150 lbs and the biggest was 425lbs. The average distance was probably in the 70-150 yard range. |

Ive used the 53 grain Corbon TSX and 55 grain Federal Premium TSX. I shoot 1:9 RRA mid-lengths and both shoot under an inch at 100 yds. All shots between my daughter and I on both deer and pigs have been under 100 yards and all have been complete pass through with broadside shots. Nothing has made it over 50 yards and most have only gone about 20. Granted, I have not shot a hog over 200 lbs with the rounds yet.

I reload but not .223 as of yet. I havent because I have had great success with the hornady redbox 55gr soft points. They come in a box of 50 for around 29 dollars. I have shot close to 25 hogs with it. Havent lost one yet, big blood trails and awesome penetration. Biggest hog I have taken with it was a 260lb sow with a behind the shoulder shot, she made it 30 yards. If I were gonna reload I would go with 60gr partitions or the barnes.

I've killed alot of deer with Sierra 52 grain Match BTHP from a 22-250. Not sure the difference between that and the game king but the match gets it done if you do your part.

I know/guess there are "better" options available now. But those bullets have been performing well on deer and hogs in Tx and Ok for 10+ yrs now for me. |

I just killed a 375 boar with one 70 gr tsx behind shoulder he walked 2 yards and died twitched for 4-5 seconds and that's it. The round went completely through both shoulders and the lungs/ heart were in small chunks. I'm not bsing.Lasered at 60 yards Btw how do I add a pic?

Have not had any major problem with any taking a solid hit and running off. I have also had a chance to take down 3 over 1000lbs with 55 gr FMJ and all three were DRT. |

Just got back from a hunt, had the .223 loaded with 55gr WAP HP's, any comments on using those for hogs? I usually use soft tips or 55gr FMJ, but have a massive surplus of the 55gr HP my brother gave to me, figured I'd start using some of it up.

It would really depend on the construction of that HP; if it's a light skin, it will blow up on a shoulder/ hide shield. If you hit it in the neck, it will go down like a blond on prom night. If it's a heavy skin on the bullet, then it will at least penetrate the cavity and blow up inside the hog, which will kill it. But it might not STOP it right there; wear running shoes for the chase....... |

Last weekend I used a 62 gr TSX sent this 109 pounder (according to the brand new scales) to the promised land. Through and through with 15" of penetration.

I had alot of the same questions before i went on my oklahoma hog hunt.
went with the partition and it work perfectly. Killed two hogs w 2 sbots just behind the ear at about 35 yds i may try the fusion next time but to me the rounds used were the cheapest part of the hunt. shot placement is key. we are heading back down in arch. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Yes, 3 over a 1000 lbs, and yes I do manage a ranch. They were all my father in laws pigs that were no longer serving there purpose in his pig operation. All three shot between 30-50 yards with 55 gr FMJ and all three were dead before they hit the ground. I also got four more in the "wild" last night with 55 gr FMJ shooting with a pvs 14 behind an eotech. That is cool; I just got back from Va. and we saw a couple real bruisers on a ranch there. I think the family we were staying with is going to buy in on one and split it up between 3 families. The hogs were between 750-950lb. WHOA!! I am talking bacon soaked in bacon, wrapped in bacon, dressed on a Va. salt cured ham...... with a side of bacon as a garnish.
