Very impressive results from the bullet, good looking boar, and a pretty lucky shot.

Dang, I get jealous every time I see pics like this.  Very cool, I can't even wrap my head around 22 pigs in one hunt.

01/20/15

Caddo national grasslands hog hunt. Texas- up off the red river near Paris.

Type two license No limit on hogs.

BRIT L1A1 FAL - 20 rds of 165gr hornady soft points. Mild load.

Went in at 5:20 am, canoed across the lake, to where I killed my two deer this year. Weather is clear / no wind 38 degrees with a high of 65.

A beaver greeted me 1/2 way across the glass lake. Overcast, no moon. A beautiful dark quilted sky paddle.

Waited till 9:30 to see my first pig. A small black hog. He was traveling pretty good and just visible at 50yds. No shot. He didn't circle round, and I did not spook it.

12:15 came around, the only reason I'm still here is I can hear branches breaking - finally I hear pigs walking to me.

They arrive and top over to my finger ridge at 40 yards. Walking right to me.

Four full grown hogs. One with the markings like a fat German Shepard, a black, and two browns.

I wait motionless until they are 25 yards out. Then I open up. Lead pig goes down hard, second veers left, I wing it. It charges, I end that with a second solid hit. Black one (third) turns left in front of me, I pass a .308 thru the ribs it begins "Wagner spray gunning" the bushes. Fourth has gotten past me, but I have a clear shot at 100yds up hill. I send one. It stumbles, but disappears. Five shots five hits, three hogs recovered , and the last one feeds the coyotes.

Those 165gr JSP reallllly are nasty.

The FAL was a superb choice for that day. No chasing animals in the scope. Both eyes open, robust FSB dropping on target. Ammo that had immediate disabling effect. RELIABLE. Love it. Of course I'm still asking- witch county did my brass land in? Lol.

All my hits were rib cage or low neck. The fourth was blood trail to 300yards. No pig. It's eradication hunting. So no ethical dilemma. Yotes and vultures gotta eat too.

I gutted and skinned the pigs, wrapped them in game bags, and got them all in the canoe. Got them home and put them on ice. (Used every cooler I own.) butchering took 8 hours. I have 70 lbs of ground pork, and 65 lbs of ham steaks. Two rear quarters for smoking, and two shoulders for the same. 7 roasts, and 6 back straps, and loins.

Just one of eight grindings- holy crap.
Loins, backstrap, and ham steak galore!

Yeah, southern OK is thick with them.  Not so much further north, central OK is impossible to hunt hogs unless you own the land or pay for "professional" hunts and that pretty much defeats the point.

My brother and I got a couple this weekend.  The first picture is one of the ones we killed.  The second is from a guy on the farm next to ours.  I have no weight but it's a big one.

Tusks are pretty common but ones that size are not real common.  I usually only get 2 or 3 a year with tusks that large. Mike seems to get a lot of them though.

Nice equipment and pics Thursday mike. You do a number on em. I'm using gen3 nv and just got a thermal scope.  Anyways, glad to hear u still have work in the oilfields.  Let me know if you hear of anyone hiring any honest, safe, hardworking entry level guys on any rigs. I assume the price per barrel is gonna have to be over $65 for a new guy with no experience like me to get on though. Anyways, can't hurt to throw a line out. Happy hunting!

Short squatty but thick boar.

this was from last night went to a new place with a guy from work. Cows were screwing us pretty bsd on this one but we still made out with 5. Can you smell the bbq?

So all this week I perfected my NVG hog stalking and it proved difficult but possible.
We'd Night started with one sow taken and recovered. A great 100lb eating pig for an old Navy buddy.

As the week went on I along with group of two other hunters continued to perfect our spot n stalk, last night it paid off big time, we put a converging stalk on a large 250 lb boar from 1400 yards out with myself actually getting eyes on this hog and coordinating and hasty ambush with two hunters over a Km away. Modern Icomms help a lot, long story short we got him, talk, about an adrenaline dump, it was a text book talk some body onto a target and then a perfect stalk, the hog even tried to out smart us but flanking the shoot team but they doubled back to an open area guessing he would break into the open at some point, he did less than 50 yards from them, 2 shots from a 300blk and he was down hard. We were using sentinels and PVS-14's and with the ambient light were able to see hogs at 600-700 yards, it was pretty amazing out there last night.

Ended up doing a full cape on this big guy, I put him at 250lbs give or take a few pounds.
