Get the custom version of the Marlin if you can afford it. Ghost ring sights and Scout type scope mount.
They have a longer chamber version that will still fire 45-70 if you have other 45-70s and want to ensure you never mix up the higher power rounds. |

Are you more comfortable with bolt rifles or lever actions? I have a lever in 450 marlin, but shoot much better with my Ruger bolt rifle in 9.3x62. I would choose whatever will be the most comfortable for you.

For bear I have the Marlin 45/70 Guide Gun with the large lever, Remington 673 Guide Gun bolt action in 350 Rem mag, and a Remington pump 7600 in 35 Whelen. All three will kill bears. But I cut my teeth on a 870 pump shotgun so the 7600 gets the nod. |

The .375 will have more effective range, either one will be a hard hitting rifle.
