Rifle is a Ruger RSM 416 Rigby. I killed the buffalo in the Zambezi valley of Zimbabwe September of this year.

Keep in mind the Ruger has a .223 Remington chamber. 5.56 is not safe for .223 chambers. The reverse is ok.

I am also a Marcel Thys owner. Mine is in 458wm, and has accounted for 18 elephants and a lot of other game.

Since I am going to be hunting DG if I am on a safari, and traveling with more than two rifles is a royal pita, and since I'm a lefty, I take my Thys double rifle and a left handed Dakota in 375H&H, ensuring that even if a rifle goes tits up or ammo goes missing I have an adequate and legal alternative. 458wm and 375H&H ammo are as ubiquitous as it gets for ammo in dangerous game camps and areas as well.

I have a Abiatico & Salvinelli (FARMARS) double in 375H&H as well, and was going to finish setting it up for a lefty (by having the triggers bent and removing some wood on the right side to "create" cast on, but decided to sell it. It is for sale at Champlin's now. When I was doing a lot of elephant hunting, some of it on the Zambezi Escarpment, I was thinking of a light weight elephant capable double, and bought the rifle. But decided to stick with the Thys, and if I end up in the mountains again I'll either carry the bolt 375H&H or have a tracker carry my Thys on the tougher terrain. I am 53 and I'm not getting any younger!

FWIW, I read the posts on either a small red dot or a peep sight on a double. I think I will have to go with one or the other soon, or really soon.

I bought my son a second hand Dakota in 9.3x62 with beautiful wood that had no express sights and looked like it had never been fired. (Which might have nearly been the case - I had to switch out firing pin springs to achieve 100% reliability.) I had JJ Perodeau add banded front and rear express sights and a banded sling swivel stud. My son is no 15, and I hope to go elephant hunting with him within the next few years, He is already quite a deer, duck and goose hunter. A better deer hunter than I am or ever was.

No, Buzz and I first hunted Chete and managed to kill three tuskless in two days and then Buzz came up with a PLAN B and we moved to Omay South and took the bull in the previous photo and a crop raider we were able to take on a non trophy permit. [Actually, both bulls were raiding crops, but the second one was chasing people too, and was getting stoked up and aggressive on tobacco in the tribeswomen's fields]

Haven't been yet, but I'm planning for a safari for the summer after I finish dental school.



A big part of the long term plan is that I will have built all the rifles I use while in SA.

My current safari project guns are a 1903a3 Springfield action I've rebarreled in 9.3x62, and a lightweight 7x57 on a small ring Mauser action.



So far not much in the .40+ bore range has sparked my interest for a larger bore rifle, though I've contemplated a .458 Win Mag as I received several hundred cases in trade.

7x57 is a great caliber.
I think it performs better than its ballistics would suggest.

Just picked my first true big bore- ruger m77 in .458 win mag. I knew the owner of this rifle and it has been shot under 6 times in 26 years. I know because he brought in a box of 14 rounds he bought with the gun.

It's wearing a Leupolds vx3 2.5-8x36 I had laying around and I'm kinda on the fence on it, but it's growing on me.

I've only had it out a few times, but so far, so good. I would defiantly recommend it.

So true. The one where they're kicking back in the folding chairs, while the locals wallow in dirt waiting for there share of the kill, would make their heads explode like in the movie Scanners.

For some reason my own photos are not showing up for me, but I know which photo you are referring to. The liberals would go bat s--t crazy, bitch, complain and try to shame me and others from hunting in Africa and then do not a damn thing for the people there, for whom the only protein for the YEAR might be the elephant, cape buffalo or other game meat provided by the "sport" hunter. Not only that, but in that particular area the safari operator is paying the tribe for the hunting rights and employing a number of the locals.

BTW, when was the last time a liberal created a job, outside of the media?

Also, fwiw, when I have killed an elephant far from a village and there is less help available for the skinners and trackers, I have often pitched in skinning and removing meat from elephants, which must be done where they fall because of their size.

My Granddad was a PH in Tanzania in the glory days and I've always grown up around his safari stories.

His Dad was one of the more famous American African Safari enthusiasts as well.

Unfortunately most of the family safari firearms were stolen from a gunsmith sometime in the early 80's, or I would make my own contribution.

For all of you guys with the 458wm's, if you ever hear or read some fool saying the 458wm doesn't have the performance required for elephants or any other dangerous game, just ignore them or refer them to the Hornaday Reloading Manual and AA2230 powder. My 500gr Woodleigh soft and solid loads performed great at 2130fps and my 450gr truncated cone flat nose Northfork solids at 2220 using the same powder provided though and through performance on broadside shots on bulls. On frontal brain shots, the Northforks penetrated from 48" to more than 72" depending on what they needed to go through.

My loads were not max loads and were pressure tested to ensure they were sahe in my double rifle.

Caught the 416 in full recoil. Factory loaded Hornady 400gr DGS.

I have a Montana Rifle Company Extreme Vantage Rifle in .375 H&H.  Mine was one of the first built with one of MRC's own hand laid composite stocks (they used to use Bell & Carlson).  It has a Leupold VX-3 1.75-6x mounted on it in Leupold quick detach rings.

Love it.  I bought it for an Alaskan Brown Bear hunt I was supposed to go on... trip got canceled, but soon I'll try again.

Until then, it is devastating on hogs loaded with a 270gr Barnes TSX!

I just bought the same rifle got it this week havnt shot it yet but I really like the feel of the stock very trim and handy for a 375

Try some of the 250 TTSX's if you like Barnes bullets.

Agreed! I was looking at .416's and even .458's but my friend, who was bringing me along as his backup shooter (he was going after a monster Cape Buffalo), suggested I look at the .404. After reading some articles and the data, it seemed to me to be the right cartridge for the job. I am a huge fan of it now.

If you reload, safariammo.net has Norma brass for the 404. $30 per 25 which about half price.

Marty Rabeno engraver, a Leopard and 2 Buffalo among other animals fallen to this superbly accurate rifle.

Plains game were handled with a basic O/U from Browning, Cal. .30-06, regulated with 200 grain bullets after the Claw mounts & Leupold fixed 3X were added.  Function more important than appearance to me in the field.



Of course the extra 20 Ga. 3" barrels are helpful at times :-)
