I just traded into a Rem 788 in .243 from a hunting buddy of mine. Anyone know anything about these rifles? It has a 22" barrel and came with a Simmons 2.5x10x50 scope and two mags. The stock and action appear to be in great shape and the bore is very clean and sharp looking. There is a little wear in the blueing towards the muzzle.

I am planning on using it for coyote hunting out at the ranch, so I would be curious to know what would be the proper loads for that? From what little research I have done on these rifles, they are supposed to be fairly accurate for a bare bones "Budget" rifle.

Excellent rifle. Very fast lock time. A .223 788 was my first coyote gun and it was a tack driving killer; plus it just had some special karma for calling. Currently have a 22-250. It too has had an inordinate amount of kills per trips in the field. I love me some 788.

I always like the plain jane look of the 788, my brother has one in 223 and is a great rifle.  A close friend has one in 22-250 and it shoots better than I do.  You have a very nice 243 788 and those were built to last a life time.  Your 243 should make it a very flat shooting varmint killing machine.

Thanks!

I did get a chance to shoot a 788 chambered in .223 many years ago and I was impressed by it's accuracy. I am hoping this one will do just as well.......

The 58gr loads  from either hornady or Winchester work great and are  pelt  friendly

Nice rifle, I have heard most all of them are very accurate, never have actually shot one myself, seen one at a local shop the other day in 22-250, some places are placing a premium on these rifles.
