Anything centerfire that you can hit a target out to 300 yards should do fine.
They're kind of small. One young soldier at Ft. Riley tried to help one that was hit by a car. The good will well went dry when the coyote tried to bite him. Killed it with tire iron. |

A .308 would not be my first choice but it's surely "enough gun".I would use bullets of 110 or 125 grain. While coyotes are tough as hell you really don't need penetration. It's a pretty rare coyote that will exceed 40/45 lbs.
There are several really good websites dedicated to varmint and predator hunting. http://www.varminthunters.com/ http://www.predatormastersforums.com/ (if you go to this site there is a guy who posts as "mousedipper".....he is a fucking thief) |

Wow thats a crazy story. And thanks for the link. The reason i was looking at. 308 is it seems to be a good starting point for bigger game. And if i ever wanted to do competitions which i have thought about i really like that round for longer ranges. Thanks gor the advice again!

A rifle for coyote hunting is more of a personal choice. I know guys that have heavy rifles (8-9lbs) and love them. I don't like to carry a rifle that heavy. Why? Because I like to cover a lot of ground and a heavy rifle makes me think twice about crossing that next ridge. I went from a heavy 22-250, to a real light .223 bolt gun, and then to a ORC AR. For me the lighter the rifle the better. The .308 wouldn't even cross my mind when picking a predator rifle, but how you hunt and where you hunt makes all the difference. Will the .308 kill em? Heck yeah it will. Hunt them hard and have fun.

I'm getting the itch to load up my .30-06 with some 125 grain loads for groundhog and coyote b/c for some reason or another PA won't let me use the more suitable rifles I own for the task––it's the only bolt gun I have on hand right now. Any reason to think that I can't do with the '06 what I could with the .308?

People load 110gr in a 300 WM, I see no reason that a 308 or -06 couldn't do it, as long as your barrel twist is ok.

as cliche as it may be I use a Winchester 94 in 30-30 for yotes, I also use it for deer. You can pretty much use your deer rifle for a yote without any issues, but like what was said above, be comfortable with your rifle out to 200-300 yards (or the max that you would be shooting at). Where I hunt my shots are 125 yards at the most (that's just the big area, others max at around 75 yards) so the 30-30 works great with iron sights.
