I stalked up on it, planning on zapping it when it ran. As I moved up on the patch the screaming intensified and then stopped. As I rounded the patch I saw two coyotes running off with my rabbit in their jaws! Just as well, as these will all end up as coyote bait eventually.
All these were DRT, with barely a twitch. One required a follow up shot (the big jack with the wound in its haunches). That was a longer shot than I would have liked, probably around 35-40 yards, kind of pressing the limit of what I can do with the Beretta. I finished him with a head shot after about five minutes of stalking at about 20 feet. Pistol is a Beretta Neos 4.5" with a Silencerco Sparrow and a PA micro red dot. Ammo is CCI Minimags. It's accounted for probably 30 rabbits in two months.

Jackrabbit headshot. Paced off at 95 yards. Rifle is a Stevens 322a, .22 Hornet 46 grain JHP. DRT, barely a twitch. Zapped two more that night, each one right around 60 yards.

Went out with my 10 yo this morning for some squirrel for his first hunt, no luck but he had a sweet head shot on a chipmunk. We got the skin for him tacked up and drying out. Right in the ear hole and out the back of the neck at 20 yards.

Used my morkniv it did great even tough it was a bit large to get around the head/neck area. But with it being super sharp it did the job.

Third times a charm. My phone is intent on destroying every post i make. Hence,  low post count.

Here's my rifle. Colt m4 w/cmmg .22lr conversion. Aguila sss 60 gr. pills. Nothing more accurate with an ar15 conversion bolt.

Last squirrel harvested.

Here a broccoli munching rabbit on the way to the table.

And post before the stupid phone ruins it:

Went hunting on gamelands yesterday morning in my ground blind in the rain watching for either a whitetail or black bear.  At 1000 had 21 wild turkeys parade on by, wish NC still had a fall season for them .  Didn't see any so went home.  Then an hour before sunset went into the woods behind the house and drop this fat grey male.  Took him back to the house cleaned him out and went back and and got another grey, female this time.  Will those them into the dutch oven when camping later.

Good shot. I haven't had very good luck using subs on jacks. They don't seem to have the juice to reliably put them down. A head shot is a different matter.

Between my two .22 pistols that can take a can I think I have 50+ bunnies popped, nearly all jackrabbits. CCI "Quiet" .22's and Remington sub-sonics constantly disappoint me, usually needing a second shot to put them down.
The best luck I've had have been with CCI Mini-mags. I've tried CCI Stingers but even with the can they are LOUD.

Doing some work around the yard and the tree rats are almost always out in force.  Usually the 10/22 or one of the Gamo's get a pretty good workout, but I didn't feel like walking back to the garage this time so the Single Six got the task!  In the freezer with the rest until I decide to make some stew he goes!

I just bought a SXS Ithaca 20 and Im looking to kill something to break her in. Thinking rabbits and hares, and Im in College Station, Texas. That puts the Sam Houston National Forest on my to do list. If you're local, what do you know about the area for hunting, and what are some general tips for hunting rabbits? I do not have a dog, and do not live where I can have one right now :(

Where did you hunt them?

West Texas between the sand dunes at Ft Bliss and when in the hill county outside San Antonio around edges of brush.

What shotgun shot size is everyone using for rabbits and squirrels?  We've always used #6, but according to the charts from Federal Ammo, I could hunt squirrel, rabbits, and several types of bird with #7.5.  Does #7.5 get the job done?  I'm planning to use a 2.75" 16 gauge with modified choke.

I've taking some small game with #7.5s.  #6s are used if the animals are larger or farther out.

I use to just use #6 and #7 1/2... but if you plan on eating them... there's too many damn pellets.

I switched to #4 and results are much better. They still end up dead and I have less pellets to pick out when eating.

^^^This.  #4 is also better at busting through scrub/grass/branches.

So I had my first ever squirrel hunt this morning.  I had half a day to hunt before the incoming blizzard, and with a freezer full of venison I decided to skip trying to fill one of my last late season deer tags and instead I grabbed some #5 shot and headed out along a stream that runs through an area of hardwoods.  Saw quite a few, and managed to bag 2.  Now their skinned, gutted and soaking in some brine. I think I need to take one of my .22 rifles and set it up with a scope as a dedicated squirrel rifle.

It's a ton of work, even now in the off season about an hour a day is spent caring for the bird. However if you are as obsessed with raptors like I am, it's completely worth it!
