What's the deal with the black dog?

Also, what do you do with a coyote after you shot one nowadays ?Aren't the pelts cheap now?

I didn't realize this thread was pinned.  I thought it died because Maud started a 2016 thread.

Finally got out here on OH, the weather this spring sucked!   The farmer called me and said his tenant was complaining about a bunch under his shed.

I had been looking for a bullet that would explode groundhogs.  I tried Vmax out of a 223 and 150 gr hunting bullets out of a 308.  Both killed them dead, but no flying parts.  I finally found one.   Over the winter I loaded up 110 Nosler Varmint bullets, 3200+ fps out of my 308.  This is all that is left of 3 groundhogs shot at 50 yards.  The big one by itself was also about 50 yards.  He didn't explode, just ended up with a volleyball size hole in him.

Killed 5 groundhogs Friday evening, I think that is the most I have killed in one day and I know I killed one with my longest shot, lasered 346 yards.  I missed one at 325 yards because I didn't take the time to laser it, I thought it was closer and needed to come up one or two more clicks, I hit right under it.

Took this one at about 75 yards, standing with a shooting stick.  I whistled and he stood up, bad mistake.

I walked around the field and came back and perched on this hill, what a great view.

This one came out right by his dead buddy.  I didn't move them, this is where they ended up.

346 yards

Here is the view back up the hill.  I was at the top of the horizon.

I killed two more, one with a suppressed 22 pistol along the road and one in the same field as the others.  He was at the edge of his hole.  When I walked down to his hole, there was a pile of guts and a stream of blood heading down into the hole.

This one busted me at about 100yds and turned around. Got her on the run at about 200yds on the third shot.

This one came up alongside me and I got him at 10yds before he knew I was there.  Wolf military classic HP in SKS for both.

My 10yo & 2yo with the spoils of a morning hunt. My daughter loves her Marlin papoose with marbles bullseye rear and brass bead front sights.

Got one with my EDC Kahr 9mm.

Right now all I shoot is factory 123gr sst rounds. I am still attempting to find a handload with amax bullets though. I actually just ordered a carbon fiber barrel for it last night, I'm thinking my accuracy issues are due to the fact that the whole gun is built super light but I hung a barrel that weighs over 3lbs on the end of it. The carbon one weighs 1lb 14oz, i'll test it with factory ammo and then try my hand loads again.

But this rifle has already taken a 300lb black bear and a 125lb black bear this year, and it'll be used to try to fill 2 deer tags next month. I think it's a very effective cartridge.

Nice!  What are you using for a can on that 6.8?  I am looking for options for mine, and I have no idea where to start.

Form 1 all titanium. Parts from SD Tactical and baffles from zmachineworx

Was using an SDN6 that was really quiet, but too damn heavy for hunting for me.

Bagged a pretty female this morning. She had some beautiful whites and reds mixed in with her coat. The 55 grain Vmax at 250 yards put her down where she stood.

Indeed!  I'd be really tempted to have that in a full body mount posed like a lawn jockey.

I was hunting in an area that was mostly steep hills and valleys with heavy bush and scattered trees, with a few agricultural fields in the low lying valleys, it was crops of beets and grainfields. The baboons' daily routine would be to come out of the mountains in the morning and feed in the fields, and back at the mountains in the evening. I was focusing on other species like Bushbuck but ended up with some free time here and there (after getting my other species, a successful trip..long story)..so decided to try to take a baboon. Baboons are smart, skittish, and crafty. They have learned that vehicles and people are predators. They always post a sentry that will sit in a tree and make a barking noise as an alarm to tell the others to flee. Unless I was willing to take 500+ yard shots, hunting the fields during the day wasn't a great option. I was using a shorter barreled lightweight weatherby with a 3-9X set up for short to mid range (out to 400), because it was lightweight, and we were doing all spot and stalk hiking in the hills. Also, I preferred to stay at 400 or less because I don't use a rangefinder, so we found an alternative plan.
We were to drive into the valley at dawn to catch them in their beds before they would filter into the fields. The guide knew that as soon as we stopped the vehicle in the valley, that they would scatter. We would have to take a quick shot as soon as the vehicle stopped. I was in the bed of the pickup and Dad was in the front passenger seat (left side of vehicle). The guide knew what cliff face they would be at, about 200 feet above us, and 150-170 yards away, so we were ready. The strategy worked as planned. We had a 10 minute drive from camp in 35 degree weather, I was freezing, my fingers were numb, and the valley was dark. When we rolled to a stop my rifle was already resting on the steel bed rail, the baboons were there and about 8 of them started scurrying over the cliff top. I picked one out, gave it about a one foot lead, and squeezed off. I kept the swing moving when i fired, like in skeet shooting. I aimed in front of him at his hip level because I knew the bullet path was travelling upward. He tumbled down the cliff side and the tracker went to go get him. The bullet went broadside through the upper chest. It wasn't a super miraculous shot, but not an easy one either.

So, my girlfriend has never hunted, nor has she ever fished.  She wanted to do it, but no one has ever taken her.  Got her a fishing license as well as a "hunter's passport" which allows her to hunt for a year before getting hunter's safety completed as long as she's with a licensed hunter. Pretty sweet deal for $1.75 or something like that.

We had a window in the weather, so we had a couple hours to do some shooting.  Started her off with a 10/22 at 25 yards and she did great. We were running short on time, so we skipped target practice with the Tikka .223.  I just told her its the same fundamentals, except you load the ammo differently.

Got out to a spot I knew we would see a rock chuck and spotted one at 188.  I was hoping for less than 100 yards for her first one, but this will do. I had her put the crosshairs on the top edge of the chuck's back and reminded her to breath, remember her follow through, slow squeeze...................................................................BAAM!     chuck does a front flip and I go ballistic  "YOU F*CKING GOT HIM!!!!".    I was so proud of her and she was pretty stoked.
