Had another great weekend of hunting. My brother Jesse and our partner Alan did all of the killing, I provided a couple kill shots but never seemed to be in the right spot while the dogs were coming in. We hunted for almost 12 hours and killed seven coyotes. We honestly lost count on how many coyotes we saw. Some coyotes we busted walking in or saw while driving down the road, but all of the coyotes killed were called in accordance with the contest rules. With the nasty weather coming in, it was a perfect day and the coyotes were moving all day long. Days like that make it all worth it. Can't wait to do it again.

Jesse and Alan with a double

Jesse with a coyote taken by his ARP 6.8 SPC and AAC SDN6.

Seven coyotes headed to check in

Long day, well worth it

A team with nine coyotes and three Bobcats won the contest. We knew we would have a tough time with only seven coyotes with the way the dogs were responding to the call. Even if we had killed everything we had a chance at shooting, we would have ended up with 11. Now if we killed everything we saw... If and buts, candy and nuts...

Woke up at 2am last night to a few coyotes harassing my dogs, then again at 6am. My dogs are in a fenced backyard and the coyotes were louder than my dogs, so I knew they were really close. Got up and gathered all my shit and walked outside facing east, not the best with the sunrise coming. 30min before sunrise I hit the call and waited. And waited. And waited.. Finally this male came from the east, and downwind at a full on run. I waited as long as I could, at 50 yards I barked him to a stop and dropped him. He was only 12 yards from the call, lucky I didn't wait any longer. Called another 15 minutes but nothing ever showed.

We never did get a winter here in SoCal.  The Ground Squirrel population is going to be crazy this spring.  These guys were already out causing damage, so I tried out some new reloads with the lead free Lehigh Defense Controlled Chaos bullets in my .17 Hornet:

Lol I tried to get my wife out of bed to take a picture of me. She wasn't having any of it so I had to make due with my tripod and remote. Holding that coyote and trying to get in the frame and make sure its focused and press the remote was killing me. So ya I was less than thrilled at that moment,.

I can imagine!

Here is my latest varmint slayer!  Franklin Armory F17-V4 upper, on an Aero Precision lower, in the .17 Winchester Super Mag rimfire cartridge.

It will be quite the ground squirrel/prairie dog/rock chuck slaying machine!

It turned out to be just what I thought.  We spent last week killing a bunch of varmints and this rifle did most of the work for me.  Included were ground squirrels, jack rabbits, rock chucks and even a couple of muskrat.  Everything from 20 yards out to 240+ yards was dead from the little 20 grain bullet!  It was a blast to shoot and I can't wait until the next time!

Just a small part of the results:

Been awhile since I posted any photos, so here's a coyote I dropped in the forest a couple of weeks ago during an afternoon break in my son's turkey hunt. We called in some foxes, too, but they're out of season. Bummer.

Predator season is upon us. Here's a few that have fallen lately.

Mini-me's first fox - head shot with the 20 gauge.

Not my normal hunting rifle, but I use what I have at hand.

Notice the camo pants. I was headed to work, decided to stop for a stand.

I use 3" #4 buckshot. It makes some holes, there's sewing to be done if you want to sell the fur.

Head shot this coyote at about 75 yards this morning, only took him 3 minutes to come to the call. It was pretty chilly out there - people don't think AZ gets that cold, but they are wrong.

When I shot him he fell over a small cliff and landed here. Kind of a gnarly sight when I walked up on it.

After calling for just a few minutes, this big male came in from my right. The wind was swirling a bit, so when it hit my scent, the coyote almost immediately started heading away from me out into an open field. Although it knew something was not right, he moved slowly away, and continued to check back every few moments to see if he could see the source of the sound. Finally, at about 250 yards, it started angling broadside of my location, so I hit it with my rangefinder, then tried to make it stop. At 275 yards, I gave a loud "woof", and it stopped for a long, last look.  Remington R15 in .223.

My son got his first squirrel this past fall.

For Christmas I had it mounted for him.
As luck would have it my grandfather had my first squirrel mounted for me when I was 8. (1987)
And really the only reason he mounted him for me was my first squirrel happened to be a pretty rare for our area melanistic phased red squirrel.
His underside was all black instead of the normal coloring.
Mine always sat on a split log so I had the taxidermist move him onto the same wood as my sons.
I think it turned out pretty great.

The picture quality kind of sucks I need to take a better picture in better light some time.

3 and 3. This tournament started at 4 on Friday and went to 4 on Sunday. We got 2 the first night, none Saturday, 1 Saturday night, and 3 on Sunday.

It was a heck of a lot of fun and my first time using thermal. Hunting coyotes at night is a whole different world. My first kill was just me walking straight to a coyote in the middle of a field, he was laying down eating or digging, but he was distracted with something. I walked to about 50yds before he spotted me and took off, I did a squeaker call and he came back around downwind of me and I dropped him right there.

Very cool experience.
