I had a lot of fun hunting them with 410 slugs back before I moved out of Ohio.  Ohio was, at the time, a slug only state.  I wanted to Hunt deer with a lever-gun and the only one I could get easily that was legal was a Winchester 9410 so away I went.  It adds a nice challenge to actually get close enough to kill them with that cartridge.

ETA, I have used:
12 Slug: serious over kill
410 Slug: a fun challenge
58 Cal muzzle loader: Smokin'
270 Win: Felt like cheatin'
10mm Auto in a Revolver:  Two does with my 610 this year.

I've used the following:

5.45x39
.223
6.5x57
.308
.30-06
.416 Rigby

My favorite is whichever one I happen to have in my hands at the time.

Go-to rifle is a Remington Mod 7 in 7mm-08.

I use a 120 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip handload.

@jcarrol it did the job, 7n6.  50 yards or so on a doe, broadside through both shoulders.  Broke both shoulders and the bullet exited.  She bulldozed for about 30 yards and died within 30 seconds.

Any 30-30, .243, .270 or .308 makes for a great deer round (yes I left off the '30-06 , I think its overkill). As for a favorite, it depends. The .243 is awesome for recoil shy shooters, but can be marginal for northern bucks. This isn't to say it won't work, as in fact I've never seen a 243 fail to kill a deer, but when considering the BEST round for deer, it can be a little light. The .270 rules ranges over 200, although it's velocities up close can cause some meat damage when using lighter 130 gr. bullets. The .308 gives low velocities so it will not cause as much meat damage within 100 yrds, but can drop quite a bit when considering shots over 200. Personally, I choose to use 150 gr. 270 bullets out of my Remington 700 BDL for deer, but when it comes to the BEST deer cartridge, any one of the four above are gold. Just know where to shoot.

Sometimes I grab an old gun out of the back for sentimental reasons, but I'm in triple digits on deer with a .50 ML.
So that must be my go to.

My 308 is my favorite. It covers the most bases. Whether I'm in the edge of a field taking a 250 yard shot or in the woods shooting 80 or less it gets the job done and is fairly flat shooting.

I have killed several deer with 357 and 45-70 lever actions. 357 will do the job at 100 or so with no problem, the 45-70 is a little over kill and I have relinquished it to beer hunting. I'm working on a 6.5 Grendel and 458 socom now just for fun.

The 45-70 reserved for kegs or still over killing cans/bottles?

I'm running .260 with Nosler 150gr VLD.  Haven't got a deer in my sights yet (new at hunting), but I'll definitely post my results.

If I am Elk Hunting and jump a Nice Buck I usually have a 300 win 180 grain ... but terminates them on the spot if I do my part of the work.

the rare times I have been sole Dear hunting I have just used a 5 round MAG in my 556 AR.  Heavier built ... but it takes a trip to the range to confirm ballistics over what I keep loaded ups normally ...M193/855.

And have done one at 5 yards with a .45 that walked around some down while I was pissing  ... I mean or indisposed

Do your job and almost anything other then rim fire will get it done.

Road strikes by drivers 9mm or 22 rim to the brain .. but watch round deflection off what is under the head and ... Fish Wild Life and Parks hate it and it is against the law in most states.

I am thinking of going to my Barrett Next season so I don't have to gut.

Anyone had any experience with the Winchester Deer Season XP rounds? I was thinking of getting some for my 06 but after asking around i have not heard anything good or bad about them. They look pretty nasty but was hoping to get some info from someone who has used them.
