My favorite round for whitetail is 270. I've had others but I always go back to my trusty ole 270. It doesnt destroy the meat and because of the low recoil I'm able to quickly be on target for follow up shots with the bolt action.

I've shot the most deer with a .30-06.
There are some decent longer range shots where I hunt in MO, and I have taken a few with a .338 RUM. That's my favorite. |
Tons of calibers and bullets work fine, especially given the large market for hunting ammo.
I've had devastating results with .308 165gr Federal Fusion, and will be using .223 77gr TMK, and 178gr AMAX or ELD-X this year. Shit, really about anything works given proper shot placement, I've had excellent results with 9mm gold dots, though I wouldn't recommend it. |
Only shot one so far, but my favorite right now is the 6.5x55 Swede with a 160 gr SP.
.308 is my favorite. Been using my 5.56 AR the last few years with fantastic results.
I shoot a 300 Win Mag pushing a 168 grain Barnes XLC, which has been out of production for a few years. I've only got about 30 or 40 left, so when they're gone I'll need to work up a new load.

6.8 SPC...because I have a lot of it and it will get the job done for most US game.
By numbers I've killed more with a suppressed 22 pistol than anything else...
Of course, those are calls for deer strikes and I carry the pistol around with me in a my cruiser. I've killed a bunch in .308 with 178 Amax, 150 SP federal blue box and 165gr fusion. Got a couple in .223/5.56 55gr SP, XM223SP1 |

Anything .243 to .30 cal leaving the barrel @ 2700 to 3000 fps is sufficient fom a rifle.
They aren't Terminators. Michigan whitetails can get pretty big and at "across the corn field" ranges magnum cartridges are still overkill. I'm in our state's "shotgun zone" so 350 yard shots aren't really a thing here. A lot of my friends have dropped deer with .44 mag revolvers. Poking holes in the right spot seems more important than huge energy transfers. |
Toss up depending on the area. Beanfields I use a 270WSM, 25+ have gone in my freezer. I am also partial to my 308Win R25, I use it when there is a chance of hogs for multiple shots at multiple targets.

I feel that on the whole hunters tend to use a lot more bullet than necessary or even appropriate. I'm all for ethical and quick kills, but seriously, they're not that big or tough. Especially in the south, they're like bigass dogs. With proper shot placement and reasonable bullet selection pretty much anything .22 centerfire and up will be plenty. Having said that I too, like many here, like worrying about if I have the 'best' bullet. |

A heavy 223/556 like a 75-77gr bullet or 243 in the 90-100gr range. I've killed about a equal number with 308, 223 and 243 with a few in other calibers as well. The 223 works the same as the others. I often watch the deer die, no tracking. I think the 243 is a good compromise between the bigger stuff and the 223.
I do have a new 260 and 6.5 to try this year though. |
I've killed deer with everything from .38 Spl to .338 Win Mag.Nothing kills quicker than the Sierra 85 gr ,.243 Gameking.

.223 ar. Shooting a 55 grain soft point. How far do they typically run? They don't. Shot a nice 4 point a few years ago when I first started using an ar. He didn't go 10 feet. Then another 5x5 and he dropped where he was shot. Shot placement trumps caliber. In the same time frame I watched a friend shoot a nice doe at about 75 yards and the doe ran off never to be recovered. Only thing I can figure he hit it high and missed anything vital. |

30-06 for me. This is the rifle I would take to hunt any big game in America.
Pretty much any bullet works. Just hit them in the vitals. |

Shot the most with 30.06 Remington Cor-Lokt, from 5 to ~350yd.
Been carrying the suppressed SBR .300blk the last few years (when I'm not hunting over a field) with good results shooting the Barnes 110gr load. |
165gr Nosler Accubond in a .30-06 or a .308 Winchester.
A buddy of mine swears by his trusty Ford F150. He has taken a lot of deer with it! |
I use .308 150gr Core-lokt.
I plan on adding a .30-06 to my stable hopefully |
I've killed a lot of deer with 223 60 grain partitions and even more with 6.8, mostly fusions. Out west I normally use a 308. 6.8 in my opinion is the best deer round period.

This years favorite will be a patched lead round ball from my .54 cal flintlock. But my all time favorite is a 125 gr Magnus 3 blade Snuffer from my recurve!!!

7mm-08, 120 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip handload- hands-down favorite.
.308 Winchester
150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip Note: See Avatar.... Devastating results on deer. |
150 or 168 Gr Nosler ballistic tips. Winchester "ware wolf killers" or hand loads.
Typically drops them like a sack of hammers. Only thing I've seen that was more impressive Was a 12 Ga slug at 30 feet. Oooofa that had to REALLY hurt |

30-06 with 180gr or 165gr Remington CorLokt Express (PSP).
Never had a deer go more than 10 yards after being hit... and the few that made it that far were running when hit. (More of a drop and slide) Range from 30-350 yards, thick cover to open pasture. Love the caliber and love the loading. Bought 15 boxes of each weight about 15 years ago, still have 12 boxes of each left... pretty much set for life unless PA ups the limit on harvests or I bust my scope and have to zero a new one... |
6.5x55 with a 140 gr soft point is my current favorite. PPU makes this cartridge that is reasonably accurate in my rifle, cheap enough I feel like I can afford actually shoot it in the off season, recoil is a non issue and it kills deer dead.
I shot 3 deer with this cartridge last year, and total tracking distance was 0 yards. |
150 grain speer hot core flat base, on top of 45 grains of IMR 4895 in a HXP 30-06 case.
I mostly hunt in shotgun area now though, so I use a .50 cal muzzle loader. |
I used a 6.5 Creedmoor on antelope this year. DRT with a 130g Berger VLD Hunter. It made blood soup out of the lungs with a 1.5" exit hole.
For open fields I use a 20" AR10 308 with 165 grain Hornady SST handloads. For the woods I use a 6.8 SPC AR with 100 grain handloaded Accubonds.
