I'm at least several years from convincing the wife to let me do a pronghorn hunt.  I have a spare 700 action right now.  What stock barrel profile and caliber should i use.  I pride myself in distance shooting.  I'd like to take a long shot but I keep my hunting humane.

They are pretty small critters, 110 - 120 lbs max.  .243 win, .25-06 class cartridges are plenty.  If you really want distance shooting, it's likely going to be windy.  Having a cartridge that carries well in wind is probably more important than having the 'right' cartridge for speed goats.  The last couple speed goat hunts I went on I used my trusty .270 win.  It kills them just fine and is pretty flat shooting with the 130 gr pill.

A friend of mine had a .338 edge built for high country mule deer.  He took it antelope hunting to get used to it.  I think he dropped a doe at 600 yds give or take.  I wasn't on that particular adventure so I don't recall the exact yardage.   The .338 edge was way to much cartridge for an antelope, but it handles wind pretty well.

.270 is perfect for pronghorn.

I actually have a short and long action spare.  Planning on doing a direct thread remington barrel myself chambered by criterion.  I have a 260 but it is a 17Lb match rifle.  I'd like to do something around 10lbs.  I want something just a little heavier than shorter weight.  I shoot a heavier gun better.  If I did a long action I was thinking like a 7mm rem mag.  For a short action I was thinking 6.5 creedmore.  Ya I have a 260 but I like variety.  what stock should I run and should I make it a bdl or adl when it comes to bottom metal.  Considering a magpul hunter stock with detachable mag.  Give me your ideas.  I have thought 270 and even a 243.   I figured a 243 would not buck wind as well as a 6.5.

I thought pronghorn were why the 270 was invented!

Only pronghorn I've ever killed was taken with a Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55 and it worked perfectly. If I ever stumble across a good used LH 6.5x55 I'm snagging it, That's one hell of a fine cartridge imo.

I think I will probably go 6.5 creedmoor.  I'm thinking of doing a light varmint contour 24" barrel.  I may go varmint profile and have it fluted.  Still under decided about the magpul stock or doing a bell & Carlson medalist stock and adding some bottom medal.  Not a detachable magazine just bottom metal.

For a dedicated pronghorn gun.  I'd go 264 Win Mag.  Don't like that?  Then go with 7mm-08.

.264 win mag > 7mm rem mag

Last 4 I've shot were taken with a .300 Win. Mag. About anything will work. Make sure you are buying preference points until you are ready to go.

I barreled my 700 SA in .257 Roberts with the fantasy of returning to Wyoming someday.

I'm going to be using a 6.5 Creedmoor in September. Pulled a unit 73 tag.

Something in the .243 to .264 range. Personal preference after that.

My vote is 25-06, maybe a 257 Roberts
