I'm looking for a good set of optics for my Rossi 92 chambered in .44mag to hunt deer with next season ... Not sure if I should get a scope or red dot.

Thoughts?

How long is the normal shot where you hunt?

I would mount a 1.5 or 2X scope myself.

I am running a straight 4x on my Ruger 77/44.
Its all the scope it needs.....maybe more.

with all the interest in 3 gun lately, there are a TON of good quality and relatively inexpensive 1-4 and 1-6 compact scopes on the market. That would be my pick

You can find some nice Leupold 1-4X scopes online.

I have a 2.5X FX2 Ultralight on my 1894 - very happy with it. Longest shot I've had with it on a deer was 80yds. - no problem. Never tried it at 150.

I am in the same boat with my Rossi.  I don't have it yet but I am going to get this scope mount for mine, any of you guys tried this mount?

No drill mount

I have a red dot ready to go, figured I would try it first then put on a low powered scope after if I needed to.

A fixed 4x power scope should be enough for your rifle.  I have a 3-9x40 on my 77/44, way to much scope but it was on the rifle when I got it.  I keep it on the 3x setting and have been able to see all I want when hunting.  The deer I've shot with it have been inside of 75 yards distance.

I went with a DNZ mount with a Leupold 2-7
