My 8 year old son shot his first buck this morning. He shot a doe when he was 5 but this is his first buck.

He shot it with his 6.8 SPC that I built him using an AAC SD-762 and 120gr SST hand loads.

ETA: It was about a 95 yard shot.

I have seen a lot more big deer with nice racks this year than I have seen in my area since I moved here in 2008.

The nicer racks are supposed to be due to the record rain that we got in the spring.

Nope, we are having it shoulder mounted and I'm going to add a plaque with the date and the spent brass attached.

Nice work. You do know that your son is likely spoiled on hunting if he bagged that big deer this early in life.

Yea, it will probably be a long time before he gets another one that nice but he has a long time to hunt.

He has been going with me every weekend of hunting season since he was 3 and he start hunting himself (sitting with me) when he was 5. We have had a couple of not so good years but this year went really well.

Neither one of us can take any more bucks at our place in Lampasas county but we have 21 acres in Coryell county that we haven't hunted yet.

Very Nice!  I was told your Texas deer are supposed to be small.

"Quality Time" doesn't get much better than spending time with your kids hunting or fishing.
