Is there any consensus as to what are the best broadheads for deer ?

The last time I archery hunted, mechanicals were illegal here. Now they are legal so I have no idea what to get.

Despite the price, try Rage. The two blade has devastated every deer I've shot.

Do you want a fixed blade, or mechanical?  How much KE is your bow producing?  If you're shooting a lighter bow, you may just want to go fixed.

Fixed blades: Slick Trick, Magnus, Exodus or Ramcat

Mechanical: Grim Reaper, Swhacker or GraveDigger

G5's are not legal in NY.
I run Spitfire Maxx mechanicals on my Mathews as they fly like field points.
Could never get fixed blades to tune correctly, although I used to shoot Rocky Mtn. razors on my old Bear bow.

Ford vs. Chevy, everyone will have something they like.

I am a fan of Muzzy broadheads and have found their 4 blades work well out of my bow.

I've had great success with Rage 100 grain 2 blades for something like 10 years and 20 deer now .  I've never had one malfunction.  The blood trails are almost fake looking they are so huge.  I'll try to dig up a picture of a doe I took early on in using them.  It ran thru my standing corn field spraying blood EVERYWHERE!  I was covered from head to toe in blood in less than 50 yards.  No broadhead design or make will make up for shitty shot placement and mechanical heads aren't for everyone.  I'm shooting a very fast 70lb Darton bow.  If you are shooting with an X-bow or a low poundage/light arrow I would stick to the fixed blade heads.  I've never shot Slick Tricks, but hear nothing but good about them.

I don't re-build them, either.  One shot and done.

Was obviously quartering away pretty hard.

NAP Killzones are fantastic from my experience.

Best part about them is no shock collars or O-rings and they do not open while walking through the woods...that was my biggest bitch about Rage...Until rage changes their design, I won't be shooting them anymore.

Killzones put just as big of a hole in them, without the drawbacks of the Rage design.

JMO, but there will never be a consensus on broad heads.  They're all pretty good, they will all kill deer if you put them in the right spot(a field tip will kill deer if put in the right spot).  They will all fail to kill deer if you put them in the wrong spot.

I thought they are considered "barbed" when they are in the locked open position.

In CT mechanicals have to be able to reverse. No barb style.

I have taken many deer with spitfires, most have gone down within sight of me, until you put a spitfire through a deer standing in pure white snow you have no idea how much blood they will drain in so short of time, it is a sight to see, red everywhere from 0 to 50yds and its over.

A quick google search "G5 Mechanical Broadheads" show two different mechanicals offered by G5.

The 'T3' and the 'Havoc' .

Yeah, if you want to penetrate bone you want a heavy arrow and a good solid 2 blade broadhead. Dr. Ed Ashby did a great sets of tests with African game on the subject. If you are interested in such things google him - very interesting read.

I'll look that up thanks and I dont want to penetrate bone but if you hunt much at all you know shit happens one of the biggest bucks Ive ever taken was with a  100g muzzy broke both shoulders and dropped it on the spot.

We use the Toxic broadheads, 100gr. and haven't lost a deer yet. So far in the past two years we have killed 6 deer and they have ran at most 150 yards, usually they pile up less than 50 yards from point of impact. I buy them off Amazon, 12 pack for less than you can buy 2 packs of 3 at Bass Pro. They do ship from China, not sure if they are knock offs or what, but they do kill deer and leave a great blood trail. My son just got a doe last weekend, hit the left front leg bone and blew right thru it, completely shattered the bone. She ran all of 25 yards and was down, the bolt was sticking out and the broadhead was jacked up bad but it was a clean kill. He was using a Barnett Quad 400 crossbow. We have had similar success using two Parker Thunderhawks and a Barnett Jackal.

Magnus is a fantastic company.  I use mechanicals for whitetail, but if I ever go after larger game, I will most likely shoot Magnus Stingers.  I use their Bullhead for turkey.
