Just bought an upper from PSA for my son to use during this year's youth hunt. He's 10 years old, and positively deadly with the 5.56, so I thought the 6.8 would be a good cartridge for him this year before I get him on one of my .30 cal-and-up rifles.

Looking at the various cartridge options out there, and the common theme with this particular platform/caliber combination is that bullet choice and placement are the most crucial considerations.

With that said, what are your go-to 6.8mm cartridges for deer? So far, I'm liking what I see in the Hornady 120gr SSTs, although they are fairly expensive.

Thoughts?

Hornady SST or Barnes 95gr.
Good deer/hog rounds are going to be relatively pricey, and 6.8 itself has yet to really come down in price overall like some were expecting.
There area a couple companies like SSA that make a "plinking" load, but it's still not cheap.

yes. used, very successfully, Federal 90gr gold-dot on medium/large deer.

This is a great deal on these. Lowest I have seen is $11.99 a box: LINKY - PSA

120SST or 110SPH are great deer rounds. I've never had them stray off course or had to track the deer.

Save your brass and sell it if you're not a reloader. Subscribe to the shootersproshop.com email list. They oftentimes run crazy deals.

The 120gr SST's seem to shoot well out of all my family's but they are reloads. My daughters have been hunting with 6.8's since they were 7 or 8, good kid caliber and in an AR it will grow with them. I have had to track a few deer a hundred yards or so but most drop in their tracks.

I shoot factory 120gr ssts, good to go.

I use 100 & 110 ABs. 95TTSX are popular too. 110 Hornady, HPBT & 110Sierra Pro Hunter are old school budget.bullets. 120s are popular for deer & hog. But, known to fragment.

I'm using Wilson combat 95grn ttsx in my 6.8, it's expensive ammo though I wish I hand reloading equipment.

I use SSA ammo, they make a good 85 gr TSX for smaller deer and other game, they also make a good 115 gr.

The last deer I took with Hornady, I hit in the shoulder and it ended up destroying a lot of meat and blowing chunks of bullet and bone throughout the animal.

For some, that's a good thing, I prefer a bullet that stays together a little better.

Plan to try my TC Contender in 6.8 this year. 18in Custom Shop barrel in rifle configuration. I'll be using 90gr Gold Dot. Getting right at 3/4 inch 3 shot 100 yard groups with that combo. Have to wait until December though and I may tag out early with archery equipment so...

Try to get it in SPC II chamber..

It's already made, have had it for a number of years. Have taken plenty of jackrabbits and coyotes with it. I just always tag out with muzzle loader or archery before rifle season roles around so no deer yet.
