I live in PA, and I enjoy using a revolver for deer and bear hunting and I would like to know what everyone runs in the woods?

I will use a Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 mag and a TC Encore .308 Handgun as well.

Does anyone else run a handgun scope as well, or just irons/RDS?

Also does anyone have a 629 Stealth Hunter? I am looking into one to replace the Super Redhawk and also my other 629 Smith.

I deer hunted last year specifically with a handgun for the first time.  I have always carried my pistol as a secondary but never
tried to kill anything with it.  I killed a nice 8 point with it at about 25 yards. I saw him coming from across an open field at a
walk so I had plenty of time to get ready for him.
I carry a Colt Anaconda 6" .44 mag in a Diamond D Guides Choice chest rig.

You're on ARFCOM.  This is the appropriate "pistol for hunting discussions."  300BO, packs far more energy than the .44mag.  Will take deer to 200+ yds.  Quite soft to shoot as well.  This is my truck/hd piece.

In PA, can't use a semi auto to hunt. Only 2+1 shotgun for small game and turkey

I'm probably using this for elk this year.  Freedom Arms Model 83 .454

I've a 2X Leupold but given the woods where I hunt it'll probably be irons.

My wife and I killed a lot of Indiana whitetails with Model 29's.....
I later switched to a Super 16 Contender in .35 Remington.

I've strapped on my 7.5" Super Blackhawk every time I've headed into my stand, be it for turkey, bear or deer...
Not once in 18 years did a deer come within a comfortable range to take the shot with the Ruger.
When the right opportunity finally presents itself, I'll be ready, but it's my secondary option since the vast majority of my shots are in the 80-200 yard range.

I use a Ruger Blackhawk 5.5" .45lc and a 7.5" .475 Linbaugh BFR. Irons on the Ruger, red dot on the BFR. I got one with the .45 last year. I have yet to kill one with the .475.

I used to have a .45-70 contender that I used to use. But that was when the contenders had that flaw where if you would drop the hammer, the gun could still fire. Needless to say, the gun that Contender I used, was owned by a close family friend that died becasue of that gun. He was climbing some boulders and the gun fell and went off and the slug hit his neck.

Great guy. Had no family, just my grandfather as a childhood friend.

I proved it could be done.   I took this one with my 1911 using Win. 230gr. JHP.    You can see the bullet hole from my 308 in its back   I pulled high, just nicked the backbone.  Went down stunned, got to run.   Hit it in the back of the head with my 45 at about 100 feet.   Took the right antler off first, second shout put it in the back of the head.   You can see the blood trail in the back of the head.

Most of my stuff is Encore; do have 1 Contender frame and a couple of barrels - but that is mostly fro the grandson.

I have hunted with my S&W 500 and 2.5X Leupold scope. I haven't had any chances yet, but my second cousin killed two with it in Delaware special handgun hunt.

That's a really nice looking pistol.  If I was your kid I'd be like "Hey Pops, why don't you let me use the hand cannon and you can take the old slug chucker!'

I'm going to be using my Glock 29 this year for Nebraska's November firearm season. I'll probably be using buffalo bore heavy 10mm JHP rounds.

I will most certainly post pics if I manage to shoot one.. I am living in Fort Worth now, and I only get to hunt in NE once in a blue moon. This year I'll have 6 days to try to make a kill.

Fingers crossed!

I have the same pistol you are looking minus the black finish. It works great. I use a 2X Nikon scope, with a 50 yard zero it is 2 inches low at 100 yards with 240 gr Hornady XTP hp.

SuperBlackhawk .44mag with 7.5" barrel and a Leupold 2x scope.

I've shot a bunch of deer with a handgun, most of them with a .41 magnum.  Hornady xtp, hard cast swc, and buffalo bore hard cast slugs.  Lots of fun not carrying a long arm in the woods.

I want to try my custom L frame .44 special on whitetail this year.  Think bow distance.  I'm testing a 240 grain swc over 7.8 grains of Power Pistol.  These kinds of bullets penetrate very well.
