Recently picked up a Glock 20 Gen4 and will attempt to kill a deer or two with it this fall. I will limit my shots to 40 yards max. I would like some input from anyone that has used the 10mm for deer on bullet selection. I am thinking about using handloaded 180 or 200gr XTP bullets unless I hear of better options.

A 180 or 200gr XTP should be just fine.  I would use Underwood ammo if it were me.

I'll be generic since you are only gunning out to 40 yards max.

Any decent factory load will do and be effective out to 40 yards. Even watered down 10mm pills will have enough penetration to humanely kill a deer. I hunt here in KS with my G20 10mm and have used factory Hornady 155gr HP XTP ammo all the way up to my hand rolled 200gr longshot combos with success. The factory 155's are still going over 1000fps at 100 yards and will do the trick but I would go with something heavier.

I also use a 6" LW extended barrel with my hand rolled pills and have had some pretty awesome results. I prefer to use Longshot with 180gr and heavier bullets. I started out hunting using factory ammo then started reloading 10mm for more power and precision. Every now and again a nuclear round finds it way downrange on a yote or deer.

It's all about placement and decent ammo.

No need for an optic. 40 yards is about the max range I can shoot where I hunt.

I killed a 7pt buck at 30 yards with my 10mm.I used a factory 175 gr winchester silvertip. The deer went about 20 yards before bleeding out.The bullet passed through, but judging by the exit wound, must have expanded nicely.

I use really hot 180's and 200's, all XTP.

The 180's are at 1200fps and the 200's are at 1100fps.

I would use any of the hot loaded 180gr-200gr hot loaded JHP or the 175gr Winchester Silvertip.

I push a 200gr xtp at approx. 1250fps with Blue Dot from my Kimber 10mm.  From wet news print testing I did I would feel more than confident in taking deer with it.  Not allowed to use it here in NV for hunting though.

180 xtp on top of a lot of blue dot has worked on several deer for me

I like the 180gr XTP, with IMR's "Hi-Skor" 800-X powder to push it.  From my S&W 610 I get 1280fps and ~2-inch groups at 50 yards with iron sights when I do my part.

What kind of pressure are you getting?  1250 is awfully hot for a 200gr bullet.

And I use Blue Dot as well.

The 10mm is a pretty potent round.

Well I've decided to go with 180 XTPs. I am currently loading them over bluedot at somewhere around 1200-1250fps, not sure as I haven't cronographed this load yet. Hopefully I will report good things this fall.

No pressure signs visible.

Buffalo Bore advertises their 200gr fmj loads as well as their 220gr cast loads at 1200fps.  I have shot their 180gr bullets as well as double taps 200gr cast loads and they are running close to advertised velocities from my pistol.

I finished off a wounded deer this year with my 10mm.  It got up about 10 yards in front of me and my first shot flopped it back over on the ground.  It had been running so its adrenaline was up and two more rounds, all to the chest finally made it fall down for good.  It was gory, the damage that had been done to it, and I only killed it because it was wounded.
