Had the day off, overcast, cool, and I decided to go out to a new location for one of my stands. Got out there around 0620. Saw three does at about 0715, but didn't have a clean shot and wanted to wait to see what else would come by.

Around 0745 a doe walks by about 40 yards with a buck following behind. They were heading in a direction I'd quickly lose sight. Well, they went about 10 more yards and then double backed; actually met with another doe and then turned back toward me. Now 2 doe and 1 buck are walking right toward me. He passes the clearing and has his head and shoulders behind a tree. Then he takes another step. Clear visibility about 40 yards away. Take the shot, he jumps, then (to my surprise) casually "jogs" away. The other deer hanging with him didn't actually run off as I suspected. They actually came closer. So, while I'm giving my harvest time, there are now 3 more deer (2 doe 1 buck) standing 15 yards in front of me Apparently, they had no idea what happened. They just stayed there eating and never saw me. Finally, they went to where he was shot, apparently smelled the blood on a leaf and all took off.

A pic of some of the meat.....mmmmmmmm venison steak

Savage 10 FCP-K (pictured above) in .308. Easier than a bow from that stand.

Thank you. I had many other opportunities, but considering I butch it myself I wanted to make sure the kill was worth the work. Got A LOT of meat from this guy. Won't go to waste.

You are looking at this wrong sir. Meat in the freezer is a trophy on its own.

yeah it did. I won't lie, I was a little worried it would hold under his weight. I still can't believe how big that deer was.

Congrats! Got my first buck this year as well. With the crossbow. It was only a 4-pointer and not one I would normally take during rifle season, but I want meat so who cares.

Awesome job.

I too care more about the meat. I most likely won't take another buck. Plenty of does running around
