Wacked a bitch this weekend

Got my little buck tonight.  Rack's not too impressive, but is an 8 pt and we just want meat.  He darn near walked up on me from 90 degrees to my right!  I was prone on a berm overlooking a field.  He came walking on the backside (my side) of the tree row, when I was expecting him on the front side as they'd been doing.

I rolled up on my left side to kinda look around the area behind me and saw him stopped, looking right at me.  I froze for about 5 mins.  Thought for sure he'd bolt.  He ended up going to the field where a 50-60 yard shot promptly sent him running...down into a muddy field.  Yeah, had to drag him through the mud UP hill.  Thankfully, the wife's uncle was home and came to my rescue and helped drag the last bit.  I was spent.

He was getting so close earlier that, when he turned into the trees, I pulled my 1911 off my hip and laid it to my side, just in case he came out closer and couldn't swing my rifle.

.308 150gr Core-Lokt from a Savage Axis (OMG, IT KILLS DEER!!!) with a Nikon 3x9 Buckmaster.

Going for a doe later in the week!  Season ends Sunday.  (Hardly saw a thing all last weekend.)

Leading up to the shot:

Blurry, unfortunately.  Yes, I waited till he was clear of the cows, lol.  They were a long way off as well.

That's the exit.  Shot him on his left side right in the sweet spot.  Was getting dark, but looked like the stuff inside didn't fair too well.

Filled my last tag of the year with what I thought was a big doe turned out to be a buck with his foot shot off that shed looks like it was healing pretty good I'm sure he would have made a full recovery not real happy I shot him but it happens

It is a shame that it's not exactly what you wanted. However, in my opinion this deer needed to be harvested. Its tough to say whether or not he would have made it though the winter much less predators. Congrats anyway!!

Got this buck this morning right at daylight ...  Thought he was a little bigger than he was - but he was a big body deer - and a good harvest

230 yard running shot across an open field.  First shot broke the upper back, then when she was on the ground struggling to get up on 2 legs I put the 2nd one right through the heart.  Gun is a Savage 10pc with Vortex Viper PST 6-24ffp scope.  Wal-Mart brand Federal "Deer Thug" 180grain .308.  Of all the hunting bullets I've tried these group under an inch.

Love the gun and scope...my combo is very close to that... 10pc with a Vortex Viper 2.5-10...   Great shooting gun.  I am using 165 Sierra Game King BTHP hand loads... They leave a pretty nasty exit wound...  The bullets i am using are some 30-06 pull downs that my dad reloaded 40+ years ago.  I lost him a few years back so this batch of pulled bullets make me feel like he is with me when I shoot.  I wish I was able to send him pictures of my harvest... I think he would be proud....

Broke off. He had a tiny ring hanger on the back though, so he was barely an 8 pt.

So I got invited to go deer hunting with some friends this year.  First time out since my dad passed away 27 years ago.  I dont have all of the proper gear, or the best equipment, or much basic knowledge, but still managed to get to put some meat on my family's table.  Cant wait to do it again!

Out in the woods with my home defense 870 Tactical Magnum.  I picked up this barrel a few years ago for when I wanted to go trap shooting and painted it green to match.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt242/NFA_FAN/deerhunt2014/deergun.jpg

About 4:10PM, while sitting on the top edge of a hill and using my feet againt a tree to stop from sliding down, I look a little to my left and spot a doe casually eating some greenery.  Lined up the gun and pulled the trigger.  She dropped where she stood.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt242/NFA_FAN/deerhunt2014/deerdown.jpg

I think I yelled like a girl and then ran/rolled/fell down the hill to get to her.  Shot went a little higher than I meant for it to, I was aiming a bit lower than this.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt242/NFA_FAN/deerhunt2014/deershot.jpg

Not a big deer, but bigger than the last squirrel I hunted

Wait, whats this? Its a boy?
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt242/NFA_FAN/deerhunt2014/deerballs.jpg

My friend told me how to gut him so I did, then had to drag him back up that hill to get him hung up at at the cabin and washed out.

So, super excited, I got picked on for shooting such a small deer but all in good humor.  Maybe next year I can do better.  Thank you for looking, Im still so happy I was able to do this.

Gave G2's Trident 300 BLK Subsonic loads a try today.

The Trident bullet did act as advertised and created the biggest blood trail I have tracked in over 15 years.  I hit her just a little too far back to drop her right away but Im confident that if I had put it in her shoulder I would not have had to track her at all.

Yeah. I'm looking at getting a 7.62 suppressor so I'll have it before next season (Saker 7.62?), and was going to look at a Savage Hog Hunter in .308. Now, hmmm... maybe not.

It's out of stock now but I bet you can Google around and find some.  I remember finding a few different places that had it before I settled on this place.  Also, a little bird told me that G2 will be offering the bullets for reloading sometime in the future (not sure when).

Yeah definitely expensive.  I hunt in a place where I try not to disturb too many around so I wanted to try subsonics and these are much cheaper than most other subsonic expanding hunting bullets out there (Outlaw and Lehigh).  I will be holding out for the bullets to load in the future.

Also, awesome buck ralph70bjj

For the last few years, the military has had me living all over the place, but this year I had the opportunity to go home and hunt in Georgia.  I hadn't even been to our family land in south Georgia for 6 years, but I digress.

The first morning I hunted, I was on a buddy's land that I had helped him scout and put up a stand, and he invited me to hunt there.  This doe walked out about an hour in, and came from my right and straight in front of me at about 10 yards. As I brought the shotgun up, she started to show nervous body language, then made me, snorted and bolted.  As she took off I made the shot, and all 9 of the 12 ga 00 pellets connected.

The shot rolled her right over.  That's my stand tree in the background.

Processing this deer made me re-think shotguns as a home defense weapon.  One pellet hit the leg on the exit side and absolutely exploded the bone.

A couple weeks later I finally got down to south Georgia to hunt. I spent the first evening watching 8 does in a peanut field waiting for a rut buck that never materialized. As light faded, I decided that my hunting time was short and I wouldn't wait for a buck the next morning.  Trophy hunting doesn't fill the freezer when the trophy bucks don't appear.

The next morning this little spike buck walked out.  He spent a while facing away from me, and when he finally turned enough that  could take a steep quartering shot, I jumped right on the trigger.  He ran about 30 yards before he dropped.

It was my first deer taken with an AR. I used Remington's "hog hammer" rounds. Kinda gimmicky, but the only commercially available rounds I could find locally that used Barnes TSX (62 grain) bullets.

My "trophy"

Entrance wound

Exit wound

We put some back strap and heart steaks on a grill

South Georgia is so beautiful

Sorry for the long post

Had an ok West Texas hunt this weekend, we scored 8 deer between the 5 guys in our group 6 buck and 2 doe.

I bagged a buck and a doe, pretty happy.

This is only 6 that we got on Saturday, had already cleaned the other 2 from Friday.

Walking / driving around this type of terrain.  This was Friday when it was 36 degrees and drizzling all damn day... 17,000 acres of fun!

This one was relatively shallow as some of them are 300-400 feet deep. You can see my buddy in Orange in the bottom.

Neat deer!

Very! He is getting it mounted, along with the 10 pointer he got during bow season earlier in the year. I wished I could have gotten a buck when we went out together. Hopefully I will manage to get a buck next year and ill have it mounted and give it to him, kind of a present. I am sure he would be excited to have my first buck hung up on the wall next to his.

Very cool non-typical deer! Any chance he is going to have it scored for curiosity sake?

Very cool non-typical deer! Any chance he is going to have it scored for curiosity sake?

My dad shot this very atypical 13pt buck late last year, about a week into gun season for Arkansas, so I think mid November?

Neat deer!

That is a very good question, one I do not know the answer to. I will have to ask him about it and see what he says. Where would he get this done at?

You might try asking at the local sporting good store or taxidermist if there is somebody who scores for Pope & Young or Boone & Crockett, if your dad would like an "official" score. If not, maybe the taxidermist has the ability to score it himself.

Filled one of my 3 remaining tags tonight. The last day of the season is tomorrow, but I think i am done. Good season overall, i have to say. Nice thread OP, I hope to see more critters posted before it slips away into the archives! Can't wait for next year already. I was thinking, since they have one of those "what have you done today to prepare for Cola Warrior XXVIIXXX" maybe we can get one started for "what have you done to prepare for 2015 Deer Season? I have plans on canning some of the deer, making sausage and a lot of summer sausage! The kiddos love the summer sausage. I'm sure next year they will want to come out with me more!

His taxidermists said he would score them both when they get finished. Only downside is, the one I posted pictures of will be ~8 months out before its done. But I will post up the results when I get them. Hopefully by then I will have a buck of my own.

This was my best season to date.  It's been almost 8 years since I saw or shot at a buck I thought was big enough. Got lucky and shot 2 this year.

Shot both with a 300 weatherby mag I bought when I turned 18.

First one was the fist week or gun season.  Dropped him in his tracks from 438 yards. Nice 8pt

Couple weeks later I was hunting the same spot and this nice 10 walked out.  He was about 410 yards.  My biggest buck to date.  My girlfriend even wanted to pose with it. Excuse the messy shop it was in the middle of harvest

A little blurry cause I was so excited

To be honest I don't remember the exact spread. I think he was close to 20 inches. I can tell you exactly hopefully in a month or so when I get him back!

Out of three doe and one buck I got this year, I processed the three doe.

My locker took the buck and I ended up with 73 Lbs of bulk sausage, 25 lbs of sticks, 10 lbs of formed jerky.

Pictured here is 32 lbs of summer sausage and 6 quarts of canned deer. Not pictured is 2 more quarts and 10 pints of  deer in varying recipes.

It may be enough till next season!

I cant believe I haven't seen this thread. congrats to everyone on the deer.

pic of my bow buck, I let him walk at least once before while waiting for a bigger buck, the last weekend of the season I didn't let him pass.

vid I took with my phone, I forgot I was filming after the shot and had to get back on him.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/smm72itg8zu2e5o/2014%20bow%20buck.mp4?dl=0

pic of my rifle buck, I got him walking into my stand in the morning. I never made it to my stand. this is in a tie of being my best buck ever, ill know after I get him back from the taxidermist. ;)

a pic of a doe I got with my sks, she never got out of her bed.

I also got a little doe with my late fathers 30-30 but I don't have a pic. and I got a nice doe with my muzzle loader that I also don't have a pic of.
one of my best years ever, I got 5 deer and each was with a different weapon.
