doesn't sound cheap but I take it as a hunting investment and thats my upper limit.

Ironic. As I was setting in the blind with my daughter last weekend, I looked at her and said, "I need a drone that I can scan the surrounding are with while setting here. See where the deer are."
I think it would be awesome. |

Lots of states it's illegal.
DJI Phantom is about the cheapest decent drone, around 900$, plus some FPV flight gear, a few more hundred from Hobbyking, and you will be all set. 500$ won't even get you close
