I'd like to know how heavy your bolt action/semi autos are?

I have my Dads .300 win mag from the 80's and it weighs 11lbs with a very old scope which imo is kinda heavy for his setup, but it is a wood stock.

ETA:If I use my AR15 then its at 8lbs.

There should be a 6-7 lb. category.

i use my Remington 700P, I had the barrel cut down to 20", so that saves some weight.  but I have a steel base/rings and a super sniper scope.  they just changed the laws in NC too, so i'll have a suppressor on it this year when hunting.

I think my M1weighs about 10lbs loaded.
My Hartford Arms 1892 in .45 Colt weighs less than 5lbs.

8.75 pounds loaded.

I primarily use a 24" barreled bolt gun (.30-06).

I don't want anything heavier than 9lbs as I am not a stand hunter.

I will say 8.75lbs that is balanced properly (balances easily in one hand) is a hell of a lot easier to carry all day than a rifle that is muzzle or stock heavy (even if it is significantly lighter).

If I get much below 7lbs I won't shoot a rifle as well as I can (particularly offhand).

For the first time ever, last year my Rem 700 LTR with LRT Leupold was much too heavy.  My binocs were much too heavy.  The terrain and rocks I hunted really kicked my ass and I plan on carrying much lighter gear next time, along with more water.

My H&R 340 (Mauser 98) in .308 with Leupold VX-II is about 7.5 lbs

Secondary M4ergy, 14.5" 5.56 with ACOG is 7.5 lbs also

8# 4 oz is my Savage model 99 with a 2X7 leupold scope.

That's what I'll use for deer if they get wary and won't let me stick them with an arrow.

270 Win Weatherby Accumark, with scope should be less than 8. It's a very nice handling rifle, I really like that thing.

243 Sako, '68 Forester Deluxe, weighs about the same, 8 ish pounds. Lighter profile barrel offsets the walnut stock.

270 Win Marlin XL7 with a Boyds aftermarket stock. Laminate weighs a ton; that fucker has to be over 9 including the scope.

300 WBY Deluxe. No scope for it yet, must weigh close to 9. The thing is a BEAST. I kind of regret purchasing that one, I really don't want to lug that fucker around on an elk hunt...

16" 6.8 on a Cav Arms lower.
8lbs with 10 rounds loaded and optic.

So 8 pounds is the sweet spot?

I need a new bolt gun in .308 most likely.

Depends on what I'm doing and what I feel like carrying.

Tikka T3 308- around 7.5 lbs
Rem 700 30-06- around 8 if I had to guess

New for this year Remington 5r 308- 12 lbs (won't be traveling far with this one)

I trek half a mile to one stand, and 3/4 to another.  My bolt gun is right at 16 lbs which is what I deer hunt with the most, AR is maybe 8-9ish.

Yes it is heavier than most, but I stand hunt so I am not lugging it around all day.  I am also a runner so 3/4 mile is a warmup for my legs/back/lungs.

Plus, I feel the way you sling your rifle makes a big difference as well.  I carry my bolt gun like I do a carbine in a two point sling muzzle down.

While hunting, my rifle is "mounted" at all times with my setups, all I have to do is get behind the rifle.  Box blinds have the same setup in an office chair model like the mobile ladder stand below.

8 or lower.  I like to keep them around 7.5 but I added an offest red dot this year to my hunting AR that brought it right over 8.

a .300 is a serious hunting rifle that needs the weight to shoot comfortably. I'd take a 11 lb .300. you really can't compare a .300 to a .223.

all of mine run around 9lbs in 30-06 and such. I have no belted magnums to need a heavier gun.

8.7 oz when I'm pumped with adrenaline during a hunt. 87 #'s after a kill and it's time to pack out.

Seriously though, 6-8 #'s.

My rifles got progressively heavier for years. Now I'm going the other way.

Just put a semi-light contour kreiger barrel on my Sako (go-to deer rifle in 25-06) last year. It's awesome.

Not with todays tech.

My friend also has a .300 win mag which is around 8lbs, and shoots softer then mine. Both bare muzzle.

I've shot alot of .300 and .338 growing up. I'd have to shoot a 8lb belted magnum  that shoots softer than an 11lb gun. I realize that stock design has alot to do with it, but I'll take a 10 or 11lb rifle for now. I'm lucky- i'm not a real big fan of the big beast guns, primarily since I'm not hunting bears and such. I do have a .444 marlin winchester 94 big bore that shoots like a dream but that is a totally different type of cartridge than a .300-.338.

what kind of rifle set up is your friends? you have my attention in a big rifle that can shoot out a light chassis.

I really don’t know how much my LR-308-A2 Carbine Heavy Barrel with a full 20 round box weights.   I’ve never weighted it.   So I’m guessing 10# maybe I don’t know.   The way I have it figured is like a A2 Carbine

I forget, and have not talked to the guys for a while, but it was just some random rifle from his LGS.

Thanks I like how my DPMS LR-308A2 Carbine turned out and especially how it shots.  The recoil is very manageable; it is more like a push instead of a bunch or kick.   Very easy for me to handle since I had my stroke.   I lost a lot of the use of my left hand, so basically I am shooting with one hand, my right.   It sure was fun building the lower with one hand.
I need to take it and my Remington 720-300sav and see what they weight.

Optimal weight depends on some variable factors.  I like to go as light as possible, yet still have enough substance to the rifle for it to balance properly and not have excessive recoil.  For me that usually works out to 7.5-8.0 lbs for traditional hunting rifle calibers.

My favorite example is in the photo below.  This is a Remington Custom Shop 24" barrel .280 Remington, McMillan stocked, KS Mountain Rifle.   With the Talley QD mounted Leupold 2.5-10x45mm scope, a full magazine and chambered round and sling, ready to hunt it weighs 8.0 on the nose.  With the smaller Kahles 2-7x36mm scope in Talley QD rings, it is a  bit over 7.5 lbs.

DPMS Lite Hunter in 260 Rem comes in at just a hair over 10 lbs with optics, sling, bipod, and 5 rounds of ammo. If I did it again I'd probably go bolt, I might still someday, but it is pretty comfortable carrying and I like having a semi auto. Recoil is like an AR, not much there.

My 6.8spc weighs 6.5lbs with 5 rounds. I love the the weight of this rifle. Yes yes yes thats a poly lower but its perfect for hunting application. Im looking at getting a low mass bolt carrier to start getting under that 6lbs.

My 6.8 is at 7lbs 14oz ready to hunt.  Thats with a Nikon 3.5-14 that adds a bit of weight.
