Got a few questions-
Who here has used a 7.62x39 for deer or other game?
Obviously a good factory brand round helps - what round have you used ?

I'm looking at the Federal Fusion and Hornady ballistic tip as choices.
I'm looking at 200 yards or less - most likely 100....

On the deer I killed I used 7.62x39 Hornady SST, the round when through the heart. The deer was about 60-70 yards or so, she ran about 20-30 yards before collapsing with a good blood trail. The bullet made a complete pass through so I couldn't see how well it expanded. But the damage to the heart seemed pretty grave, it would probably have been worse had it hit it in the middle.

My son hunts with an AR in 7.62X39.  139 gr federal fusion does the trick.  This year he shot a nice 8 pt at 160 yards.  The deer ran about 30 yards and piled up.  Last year he dropped a nice doe in her tracks.

I have killed several with an SKS using cheap chinese and Russian hollowpoints and softpoints. 40-80 yards, never lost one. Putting together an AR now in 7.62x39, will probably continue using the same cheap crap that always worked before.

I only use the SKS for deer hunting. I just use Wolf or Tula HP. Dropped many deer.

several members of my family use SKS's for deer hunting.
90% of deer taken with them has been with WOLF HP or SP ammo. works just fine.

I use the 125gr soft point Remington Express in a Colt, Match Target, Lightweight.  This particular rifle shoots them well.  100 yds.  Right group is the bore sight result.  Center group is after adjusting the scope:

FWIW, The abovementioned cartridge uses 0.308" diameter bullets.  The Colt bbls of this series (and all of them FAIK) are designed for 7.62x39mm cartridges using "30 caliber" bullets.

Wolf sp or whatever sp I can find. I don't us the hp. Not that it may work, it's just too easy to find the sp and it is a very good short range load.
This one came on the run during a drive on one of the last days of our metro zone hunt. I shot from an elevated stand and the bullet shattered the spine just behind the shoulders. Wolf sp does seem to mushroom very well and while I did not recover the bullet from this guy I have from others.

A buddy of mine from work has a CZ in 7.62x39 and it's his go to deer gun.  He uses the cheap wolf or tula hollow point ammo and he's bagged several with it.

I took a doe this past year using Tulammo 154gr soft points and they worked great. Good expansion, clean pass through. Didn't run more than 25 yards with a heart shot

Also shot a decent 9 point using federal fusion 123gr soft points. Did really well also. For the price you can't beat the Tulammo

Killed a deer with the Remington softpoint years Ago. It did the job, deer went 20-30 yard and was dead.

I've taken many deer with my CZ 527 in 7.62x39. Most with Silver Bear "Effect" cartridges.  I bought a butt ton of this stuff years before the last scare. Lately I've been using Privi 123 grn. Soft points, which are a bit more accurate. The largest deer I ever harvested was this rifle with the Privi ammo: a heavy 10 point at 75 yards.  The little CA carbine is a deer meat machine. I love this rifle.

I've used Brown Bear 125gr SP and Federal Fusion 123gr. Both will put deer on the ground very effectively.
