I use irons on a few of my guns. My 12 and 20 gauge slug guns, muzzleloader, and 30-30 to name a few.

They were hunted like that for centuries. I hunt with a Spanish FR-8 in 308. Aperture and post works great to 300 for me.

When I was younger I shot one with an open sigh SKS. Since then I have had scoped harvests. This last year I decided my .30-30 Marlin with irons was going to be the next harvester.

Marlins in .35 and .444. The Marlin wears a Skinner aperture sight, the .444 has factory irons. Both will get the job done where I hunt.

A scope makes a big difference in low light situations. This can be early morning, late evening or a thick forest.

All of my guns rifles have optics except my purpose built skeet O/U.
Do not like open sights - and especially HATE peeps. Maybe thats why although I consider myself a pretty good shot I have to practice 10X with pistols vs. rifles to get what I consider decent groups. Shooting a pistol well is a HELL of a lot harder than one would think. I really sucked when I first started and after putting 1000's of shots downrange I'm only mirginally decent. I was pretty amazed when I saw a real bullseye shooter ply his craft. Called every shot and everything was in the black. |

I regularly hunt with a Winchester Mdl 94 in 32 Win Spl that's been in my family as long as I can remember.
This rifle taught me to hunt. I say that because you HAVE to get within 100 yrds; although I try to keep my shots within 70. This rifle taught me alot about patience, stalking & markmanship. That Mdl 94 is still my favorite gun when walking; it just carrys so easy. |

I have an old Marlin 1894 in 44mag that has XS Ghost Rings. It's fun to shoot. I use that for a 50 yard tree stand out back.
Real light and carries very well. |

Growing up I used a single barrel .410 shotgun with slugs to hung deer. Iron sights worked for me.

I killed a truck load of deer with a M1 carbine when I was younger. I've got a win. 30-30 I carry sometimes when I get the hankering.

Last season I shot 3 deer with a marlin 336 in .35 Remington with open sights and Hornady LeveRoution ammo.
This year I would like to get one with a revolver with open sights. |

I don't care for optics. Iron sights on all my long guns.

Iron sights on all my long guns. My eyes are getting older so I have moved to FO front sights.

Just something about a stripped down rifle with irons. No batteries to go dead, or lenses to fog. Simple elegance.

Hunted with irons only for over twenty years.
Then in my mid 40's my eyes went.......gone. Oh I can see the deer just fine. Just can't see the sights. Set up a Marlin GBL 45/70 with Williams tru glo sights last year. Brought it on a bear hunt but when it came down to it I left it in camp and shot the bear with a scoped rifle. Just did not want to take a chance. Maybe I will try again this year. But yea rifles without scopes look really sleek. I just wish I could see.......... |
