I just looked at the new Ruger American rifle and it looked impressive for the price. A used Rem 700 or Win 70 is probably the best deal though.

If you're spending a few bucks, look at the Tikka. Great gun, and usually shoots at an inch at 100 yds. On the "strictly functional, and not pretty", look at the Savage with the Accutrigger. Make sure you get a chance to dry fire....very accurate for a workin' mans gun.

Perhaps I'm a little biased since this is all I've hunted with, but I would strongly recommend a Winchester Model 70 or anything Savage has to offer. And if you think Savage doesn't make a pretty gun I recommend you look into the American Classic series of guns. I just picked one up about a month ago and that thing is GORGEOUS.

can't go wrong with any of the following:

Remington 700
Remington 7600
Winchester Model 70
Savage 111 or 116
Tikka T3
Weatherby Vanguard or Howa 1500
