I won't argue with you guys because I know about as much about measuring deer antlers as I know about nuclear physics so I'll try and get details on the measuring, who did it, etc. whenever my Dad gets back from his trip. I'll also get more details on the ranch for whoever asked if it was a "high fence/enclosed" ranch. First thing I did when I heard the numbers was Goodle Image search the Milo Hansen buck.
If I don't reply in a day or two shoot me a PM - I have a high tendency to have a one track mind and forget about shit. |

I think there is just alot of confusion out there in measuring a rack and like others have said, pics dont always relay the actual size of the rack. I see a lot of people give their deer way too many circumference measurements. I have given up on trying to explain the right way of doing things and just give a "That's big." |

Got an update from my dad now that he's home. The score i got was relayed to me from my mom. The ranch scored it 203 7/8 but the taxidermist said it was scored wrong. They gave it 192 7/8. Apparently the ranch measured around the entire left base as the g1 or whatever and got 8 off that alone. When measured correctly it lost 4 from that alone. Also it used to be called the unicorn buck because it used to have a point that came straight out of his head down almost to his nose.
That deer is not my dads either just so everyone knows. My dad killed one that was given a 138 or so. I'll post pics of that when i get home. The "trophy fee" on the big deer would make most people throw up. More than some people make in a year. Definitely not worth it to me. The ranch is a privately owned 8ft fenced 6,500 acres. Thirty two stands on the land. No pens just the overall property fully fenced in. Was fenced 3 years ago over a period of 60 days. Prior to that it hadn't been hunted in over a decade. Only 4 people are given permission to hunt it per year outside of friends and family. No genetically enhanced deer, no pens, cages, etc. |

I've seen lots of mistakes. I've seen people add in the outside spread and the mainbeam tip-to-tip spread, which are requested on the score sheet but are NOT to be included in the score. I've also seen people add the ends of the mainbeams as separate points (measure from the last front tine on each side forward.) Great deer, everyone! |

Thanks HAG and Matt... I have been chasing ducks for the last decade and deer have been kind of secondary in my pursuits. This buck reminded me how intense moments in deer hunting can be. He ate behind a pine tree for about 15 minutes before offering me a shot. After he was on the ground it seriously took me 5 minutes for me to gather myself and get down from the stand. I shook until I got to him, appx. 80 yards from my stand. I think I might have gotten addicted to deer hunting again!

I agree on the second rut thing cause I watched about 80% of the bucks this past weekend chasing the does around again. It was all the young bucks though. The bigger, older bucks were all about the food. |

I'm still like that after years of deer hunting. I'm even like that if I shoot a doe. What's funny is that I'm cool as a cucumber until right AFTER the shot, then I fall apart. I start shaking and my teeth chatter like it is below zero out –– even if it is 70 degrees. You should have seen me trying to text my friends this year immediately after I shot my buck. |

I rough, and I mean ROUGH scored him today and got 159 3/4 gross, 151 net. |

It's kinda hard to get perspective on him, field dressed weight was 230lbs. I can't find my scratch paper, but if I remember right, his right main beam measured out at 28 1/8" long. |

What part of KS were you in? Glad you got a nice one. That's why I love this state. We have monster whitetails, mulies, antelope, and elk. Can't do all that in Iowa JK

Kansas has given me 3 good bucks, all in the mid 150's to low 160's, in 5 trips. I certainly can't complain. |

He can't wait to get down there! Of course, I'm very jealous!!! We also have an Axis deer running around down there too (heard him this weekend). Nice! Looks like your friend will have a nice buck to harvest. Good job keeping his feeders going and scouting for him while he's out of town. He should have a great hunt. Let us know if he shoots that 9. |

Here is a 10 pointer that weighed 126 dressed that I shot on the opening day of Southern Zone here in NY. I was sitting down for 10 minutes when he came walking in to a doe bleat. One shot with my Ithaca 16 gauge Deerslayer and down he went.

I killed her in almost the same spot I shot the 10 pointer. I was using my Euro Arms 1853 Enfield Musketoon in .577 caliber. She was 100 yards out and I nailed her as I jumped her and a second doe. I got her in the neck and she dropped on the spot. http://i561.photobucket.com/albums/ss57/Smith29-2/muzzledeer2.jpg http://i561.photobucket.com/albums/ss57/Smith29-2/muzzledeer.jpg |

The 16 gauge is an old timer, a deluxe version made in 1971. I inherited it from my uncle about 10 years ago when he gave up hunting. Besides deer, it has taken ruffed grouse by the dozens and one really big coyote.

Both deer were taken in the town of Melrose in Rennselear County.
