Would have taken the Grendel out if I'd sighted it in.

My new friend, that I brought home with me. I found him, lost, wandering in the woods. Isn't he just cute?

Probably tasty too...

6 pointer

I didn't get out until the morning before yesterday. He walked by me in the morning; he was at my 4 o'clock, I wasn't about to take a "Texas heart shot," as that's what he'd left me with by the time I got turned to face him. He slowly disappeared into the brush with no clear shot.
After going in for breakfast, I went back to the same spot. He came from another side approaching a scrape line.

I needed some meat in the freezer, so I sent him an invitation in the form of a 140 gr Barnes TSX. That 7mm-08 is rather persuasive.

I definately made sure he was in no condition to make an escape with my rifle mounted, before I took the pic.

Nubbin buck I got this morning of the Wisconsin gun season opener. Ruger 77/44 using Hornady LeverEvolution 225gr 44mag. Shot him broadside at 65 yards, bullet turned and exited just in front of the rear left hip. He ran about 70 yards and piled up.

Second deer down, turns out this one is a buck fawn too. Got him a little before 9 this morning. For some reason it took 4 shots to bring him down, all were in the shoulder area. So far I've not been real happy with the LeverEvolution 44mag ammo.

Below is my son's second deer and a staged photo of him getting ready to take the shot. The deer presented us a nice broadside shot at 100 yrds and he hit it in the center of the shoulder - the deer went about 80 yards. The bullet appears to have deflected off of a rib or the off side shoulder. I didn't think to trace the path, I was just happy that all of the damage was contained in the heart lung area - the damage was significant. I let him track the deer after the shot, I just stood back and took some photos. We spotted the deer shortly after entering the "forest" however, I made him follow the signs all the way to the deer. I have to give him credit because he spotted some signs that I missed.

Shot this big 120lb doe with my shiny new AR. Used an MFS 62gr SP at 45yds, she made it about 6ft. Good enough for me!

Good morning at the south lease. I've been telling my hunting buddy we need to take more deer off of this property than we have been. We've had the place 4 years and only taken 5 deer off of it. We usually see 5 to 10 deer every time we go. This morning I saw 13 and he saw 5. These and the 2 I took in bow season should be a good start on thining the herd.

December 30. 2 months into the season and I haven't had a chance to hunt one of my properties until today. This one came by pushing a doe. He came in pretty quick and I didn't have time to judge him to good. Probably should have let him walk and given him another year but not a bad buck any ways.

7am on opening morning (November 2011) of the Kentucky modern gun season.

Kentucky has a one buck limit so I spent most of the next week harvesting does and being the camp cook.

Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks

I got this huge muley doe last weekend and put over a hundred pounds of meat in the freezer. Ruger Gunsite Scout with a Burrs XTR 7.62 at 1.5x, shot at ~50 yards with a Federal 168 gr. OTM bullet. I'd never used the "match" bullets for hunting before but this sucker entered the chest just forward of the left shoulder and left a baseball sized exit wound out the right side just behind the shoulder. She ran about 20 yards and dropped. There wasn't any lung left to see really.

Got home with it, cut the backstrap in to strips, then marinated for 2 days in soy sauce, cherry brandy, and Worcestershire with a splash of Coke and some diced garlic and black pepper. Yesterday I sliced it in to ~1" thick medallions and grilled it over medium heat for about 4 minutes per side. Delicious way to start your work week back up again.
