2005-55gr gameking SP1 type rifle. Yes, I know it is tiny. I was sleeping in my stand and just woke up to see three deer trotting out right in front of me. I didn't have a lot of time to think about how big the deer were before I shot.

sure is a shame that someone did that to your dog.

Yeah, not my proudest moment but I figured if I did one I best do them all.

had to wipe the milk off its muzzle, huh!?
j/k, but a friend of mine shot one last year that actually looked like
it had milk on its lips.  To be fair, it was a looooong shot.

Why do so many of you shoot those little baby bucks?  Did you know that they will get bigger racks each year if you let them live long enough?

Are you referring to the Roe deer in the post above yours?  If so those look to be a pretty good mature example of a Roe deer.

I don't understand why people kill small, young, or baby deer either.

I guess maybe some poeple don't care, or maybe some poeple don't have standards, or maybe some people prefer the meat from the youngsters.

It must be a trophy for me to shoot it. Just my .02 cents.

If all you will shoot is a trophy how are you going to control the population mufflerman1060? And in my limited experiance doe deer and cow elk do generally taste better. Prob 45+ deer and over a dozen elk for referance here. I guess meat hunters and trophy hunters are often not the same individuals and I respect the fact that you hunt and support our endevers afield.

If you guys dont want to look at my 2 little deer scroll down I was happy because they were my first big game with an AR rifle. But I would not intentionally shoot a fawn again as I can not tell if they are going to be a buck or not till it is too late. (I should never shoot a whitetail when it is by itself in a field). Any how here are the two deer from 112 yards (fawn) and 94 yards (buck). Both taken with my factory stag arms 6.8 upper (except the front sight block) and a Stag 6.8 lower I just got and put together with a Stag LPK and a bushmaster a2 stock. Both were shot with SSA 110 grain seirra soft points. Both rounds exited the far side. Shot the little fella in the head a second shot cause it was still movin.

I am not putting anyone down or questioning anyones expertise.

I choose not to kill baby animals. If other hunters do, more power to em!

It is true however, that dead button bucks will never grow up to be LARGE bucks.

It isnt my job to control deer population, that would be the Division of Wildlife.

Sorry, but I don't eat wild game. I hunt for the sport, to spend time with friends and my sons, and I give the meat to friends of mine.

They taste much better....especially with milk!

more than likely...buttons would never grow up to be a trophy anyhow!

How the hell would they do that?  Minigun spotlight trips?

Some will see that as all kinds of fu$#ed up...if you won't eat, why kill...use targets!

Here in Ohio where I live, the deer population is sooo out of control, the Division of Wildlife hired a private company to come in and thin out the population using hi-power rifles.

The problem was alot of the peole living in the new housing alotments threw a fit. They were complaining that their families lives were in danger, and the 2nd complaint was the so called sharp-shooters were smothering deer with plastic bags that did not die with the initial shot.

So I guess that kinda explains how they did it here anyway.

I guess I am kinda screwed up. I like to outsmart them in their own element.

I dont mind jerky and stuff, but I really prefer a good ribeye. haha

Nice buck mr. newblkrifle

Solon?

I know you're against shooting anything that isn't wall worthy, but you should look into trophy management.  Fewer does means better bucks.

Southern part of akron, springfield township, if ya know where that is.

I have a large pond in my back yard that is spring fed, and I put up 2 licks, and made 2 really nice feeders out of 6" pvc.

Their are a ton of deer here. Every night there are 6-10 out there. They even walk right up to my swimming pool. It is insane. I have been eyeing a 12 point, biggest I seen here. Alot of 6's and a few 8's.

There are does here that have got to be 250 pounds if they weigh an ounce.

Nice bucks!

Here's my first, but not last AR15 deer kill:

Dropped her with a lucky spine/lung shot with a handloaded 65gr Sierra SBT in .223 Rem.  Range was about 125+.  Was unable to recover any bullet or fragments due to a quick gut job and a rush to the processor.  Made it to the processor with about 20 minutes to spare.

Saturday the 22nd kills, about 2 minutes apart.  My wife shot the small button buck with her .243.  Good lung shot.  He ran in about a 20' circle and fell down, kicked a couple times and was still.

I didn't see much of anything else all week long.  I was glad these 2 plus 2 more stepped out at around 4:50 Saturday evening.  Gutting in the dark sucks, though.

10 points, 18" spread..

6.8 with SSA 110gr Pro Hunter.  Neck shot dropped him in his tracks.

and no, there are no handguards on my 6.8SPC.   I am waiting on delivery of a FF tube and just got anxious to take it out.   Hopefully it will have a tube on it by Monday.

Michigan 9 point, 14 3/4" inside spread, 160 pounds dressed, shot at 42 yards in the heart.

The rifle is my 6.8 SPC I built it earlier this year, and the ammo was handloaded 110gr V-Max at about 2650 fps, if I ever have kids that have an intrest in hunting they will be shooting a 6.8 SPC not to say it will be an AR but maybe a Remington Bolt gun, the round is amazing no recoil, not extremely loud and perfectly capable of taking deer out to 350 yards if needed.

Well, I got this one on Tuesday morning.

It was just AM civil twilight when I heard a nice crunch crunch crunch in the grass in front of me.  I looked down to see it coming around the trees.  I put my sights on it and it kept coming right at me.  I didn't want to hit it in the head, so I let him get a little closer hoping he would turn.  He got within 15 yards and stopped to eat some clover.  I didn't want him to get any closer and chance not being able to take the shot, so I made a slight noise.  He turned ever so slightly and I depressed the trigger.  A split second later, a Lightfield 1 1/4 oz slug took out part of his spine, shoulder, and made a mess of his internals.  He dropped on the spot.  Not even a twitch.

Not that I really wanted a spike, but it's my first deer, and I wasn't about to pass it up.

My daughter can't wait to get out and get hers...that's her mad face that she didn't get to go with me.

Now there's plenty of meat in the freezer, ready for dinner!!!

Went to Minnesota this year with my A1-style AR in .223, since MN now allows the caliber.  I've got other ARs, but brought the 1-7 twist A1 for its novelty, fixed sights, etc. and because of the election - not knowing if it would be affected in the 2009 season.

Second day, hunted all day, and then at 4:45pm 20 yards to my left a big doe stepped out and came down the trail towards me.  Crossed in front of me at 8 yards and then turned going away.  A home-made Nosler 69gr BTHP dropped it at 25yds with a spine shot, then a finishing shot was needed.

It's my first rifle deer kill and I was happy for the meat because a lot of guys weren't even seeing them all around with all the corn still being up.  Deer turned out to be a 125lb button buck, which is Big for a button compared to one from Illinois I got 17 years ago that was 105lb.

My film camera wouldn't take pics in the field, so I had to improvise with the digital today...

Thanks - I live in Lake County (NE corner) about 90 minutes N of Wheaton.  Hunted 1/2 hour North of Taylor's Falls, MN.  Talked to hunters at gas stations, restaurants, and at Gander Mountain - not a whole lot of deer movement nor shots taken in that area - too much damn corn left standing for the deer to hide in...  Maybe MN will put in an additional special hunt weekend next year if their deer kill numbers don't make par...spread the rumor...
