I posted a new topic on this forum on accident (meant to post it here but hit the "New Topic" button on accident. Figured I would put this here as well... My first AR deer kill and first deer in CA. Gun is a mutt of a 6.8 SPC that I built myself with a lot of great tips from the BIY forum.

My first buck.  3x2 Blacktail.  Shot with my handload 150gn Seirra Game King under 65 grains of 4831, 7mm Remington Magnum.  Glassed him on top of a unit from the road he was laying in some brush between two trees.  Hiked down in on him and he was just laying staring at us (buddy and I), must have thought he was invisible behind brush.  I got down prone, setup rifle on bipod for shot and took him right in the neck (only his face and rack was visible through the brush).  Broke his neck instantly and he dropped where I shot him.  Only lost about 2lbs of meat from the wound cavity.  16lbs of steaks, 2-3lbs of roast, and 40lbs of burger, yum!

My first deer-nubbin buck 2009, my second-a spike mule in Wyoming 2010, and third, a doe in Wyoming.  My fourth and fifth, two does in 2011.

Rifle is a DPMS, first deer was taken with an upper I borrowed from a friend with an EOTech and a standard AP4 stock.  Wyoming deer were with a Lite Hunter upper and a Bushnell scope (which I hate.)  I also changed the stock to the full rifle stock, the adjustable one was way to noisy to hunt with.  The last two deer I didn't get any field pics, but I changed the scope to a Leupold VX3 3.5-10, which I love.  I hunted with a Winchester Model 70 Ultimate Shadow in 308 last year and moved the Leupold scope to it, no deer though.  If the DPMS is going to get any more time in the field, I'm going to have to put another good optic on it, a lighter stock, and a much lighter barrel.  The thing is just too heavy for me.

First buck of my life I shot yesterday.(13 points) After a really disappointing morning listening to the duck hunters start WWIII, I went back out around 3pm. I was using this weekend to decompress and take some much needed time off from work so getting out early was not bothering me. I had taken a piss before I left but apparently my bladder said he needed a break. So I scurried out the back of the blind and took my leak and ran back in with my pants and belt still undone. No sooner I had the blind zipped back up and pants about zipped up, he comes from the brush about 80 yards from my 11 o'clock. He jumps the barbed wire and give me the butt but finally give me a good shot. 165gr Federal Fusion liquefied his lungs and heart and he dropped in three steps.

Shot yesterday, it's muzzleloader season here in VA. Used a .50 Cal CVA Optima, 250 gr bullet in a sabot. Shot was quartering away from an elevated position. I put it behind the left leg, through the heart and smashed through the right shoulder. One stumble forward and he was done.

Blitz308, congratulations to your son. My own son is seven months old, I'm in my mid-thirties, and I just got my very first deer this afternoon. Shot him off-hand, with irons, from my weak side (left hand on the trigger, left eye on the sights) at about 45 yards.

Thanks guys.  I'll pass the attaboys on to my son.

Congrats to you as well.

Probably going to get a day or two in, hunting by myself, and then take some of the other boys out, to give them a chance too.

Not an AR, but definitely evil and black!  My first buck ever, taken with SCAR-17 and Federal 180gr Deer Thug. The shot liquified his aorta and he went down where he stood.

Big 8-pointer, 24.5" inside spread. Sucker weighed about 200lbs dressed, probably 220-230lbs walking around. Going to be a while before I can top it, I'm sure!

He was 8' on the dot from toe to nose hung up like that. I'm 5'10" and 200lbs, for reference. I couldn't be happier with how my first deer season turned out!

Last morning of the season, 3 does are walking the fence line to my right but were on the opposite side of the fence and proceeded to turn back into the woods rather than jump the fence.   As I was  telling myself "That's it, season's done for me", this guy walks out of cover but on my side of the fence.  Quickly took the shot since he was about to follow the does and would have jumped the fence pretty quick.   Shot entered around the shoulder and glanced upwards completely severing the spine about 1" wide.   He didn't take a step, just flopped on the ground dead.   Lungs were soup but the heart was not hit.   About 70 - 80yds.

168gr A-Max from my DPMS SASS.   Love that rifle and load.   Every deer I have shot with it has nothing but goo in the chest cavity.

you may have wanted to kill a different deer for your first.

you'll be ruined for a long long time trying to find something better to put on your wall.

Congrats on the kill and welcome to the brotherhood.  I've always thought it truly changes a man to stalk, kill, clean, and then eat his own food.  You are the descendant of a thousand generations of hunters and killers.  Be sure to pass along the skill.

Congrats!

First ever deer hunt and I used my M&P15 with one shot to the heart using 55g .223 Fiocchi FMJ, I was able to stick my thumb through the heart. No mag capacity limit and the only rule about ammo is that it must be center fire in my state.

This 10 pointer was taken on public land in middle TN on 30 Nov 13.  Its the largest I've ever taken in this area. He was taken using my 7.62x40WT at 89 yrds, it was a perfect shot in the shoulder ran about 30 yrds and dropped.  It was a great morning, I missed a smaller buck and almost left, I'm sure glad I didnt.

I shot this guy opening weekend. I was out Wednesday through Friday. I heard him Friday morning behind me scraping and grunting a little bit. I grunted back at him and he grunted again. I grunted once more and didn't hear anything else. I took Saturday off. Sunday morning I went back out and was in the tree before dawn. I heard him behind me again, scraping and then he let out a long grunt, 5-6 seconds. I grunted back at him and he responded louder and more aggressive. I grunted back and he replied with a loud snort weeze, he was angry.

He came out of the woods to my right about 50 yards away and never stopped moving until he was behind cover. Kept his nose on the ground the whole time, sniffing for the two does that had been in that area and me. Finally at the 11 o'clock position he turned broadside and gave me a shot. He ran about 40 yards and laid down to die. Only 4 points on him, but he dressed out at 156 lbs. Long body and long legs on him. Got my freezer stocked and meat for the winter.

was the second weekend of whitetail in south texas and I had just returned from a TDY. my family ranch is about 50 minutes from the doorstep of my house, and of course that morning I overslept. I run out and crank up the ole cummins and begin my trip to the ranch. the whole way I was doing nothing but kicking myself in the ass for being late as the sun had been up for about 45 minutes buy the time I left the house. I finally made my way to the ranch, walked down to the stand with my trusty .270 in tow. I get settled in and look and my watch 0856. I figured I would sit in the stand all day in hopes to catch a mid day straggler. I lean back in my seat, take a drink of my coffee and light up a cigarette. by the time I was done with my smoke and a coffee I had four does under the feeder. I was debating on which one to shoot as I wanted the biggest one of the group. as I began to reach for my rifle, all four does go into full alert and are snorting, figuring I had been scented. I quickly brought up and steadied my shot. as I slowly started to squeeze the trigger, they bolted. once again im livid. as I raise my head above my scope and look to the left about 30 yards into the clearing, I see why the does had been spooked and pushed off. needless to say, I didn't let him take a step more and dropped him in his tracks. 8 -point with a start of a drop tine on his right main beam
