Took the technician test on 9/20, my call sign showed up in the database on 9/26.

I've already made 3 random contacts on 2 meters and I took place in a net on my local repeater.

Everybody has been very nice on the air so far.

I joined ARRL yesterday as soon as they had my call sign in their database.

I also took a ride up to ARRL headquarters yesterday to pick up the general class book.

I am really enjoying this new hobby!

Most excellent!

Just wait until you get into HF.  That's when the fun really starts.

Congratulations! Welcome to ham radio.

If you're the DIY type, build one of these, connect it to your HT, put it on your roof or in your attic, and increase your range several fold. Also, start working on your General because HF is where the really fun stuff happens.

I am a new ham also, do people just build antennas because they like to, or is there something to  be gained beyond saving money?  Not discounting that it might be a fun part of the hobby at all, just curious.

A bit of both.   It is pretty neat to build an HF dipole for a few bucks, throw it in a tree and work halfway around the world.   Plus you learn some things too while building.   You can save money too by building yourself.  In the old days, hams build almost everything as there wasn't much commercial equipment for sale or it was very expensive compared to today.  You can build antennas with stuff laying around the shop.  Or head to the hardware store on be on the air later in the day.

You gain knowledge and can usually save money unless it's a complex assembly that requires special components and/or fabrication.

Congrats.

I just got mine too about 2 weeks ago.

VHF is ok, but I really want HF so I am studying for General.

But damn, how do you remember all that information about bands.

This, and funny thing is, while studying, I was confounded-but once I put it there in front of my station, it all made sense.
To pass the test I memorized any question that had numbers in it (math and freqs) it was better for me that way
