Congrats Adirondack1!
I suggest getting an inexpensive 100Watt HF rig since your Tech privileges will allow you to play on 10M. The antenna doesn't take up much space (a 16' painter's pole and two 8 foot wire elements) and will get you talking all over.
Or just get the ArfHam special, Icom IC-7200 (w/ handles of course), and an LDG IT-100 tuner and you are set. A used Kenwood TS-590 is also an excellent if not more capable (think 6M FM) rig for a few bucks more. Both of these rigs offer a direct USB connection to your PC for the digital modes so you don't need another piece of equipment--the radio will handle it for you. While I enjoyed talking on the local VHF/UHF freqs and repeaters, using my Tech privileges on HF was much more enjoyable.
Don't worry about the cost of it. What with ARJedi (and now SCWolverine) just expect that they will have you spending pretty much everything you have. While your lips will say no, your fingers will say yes to the order button. Nevermind that SCW just posted a discount code for $200 off a Kenwood 590SG from MTC radio.
