I'd like to get a protective case to put my RigExpert in instead of just a cardboard box

I picked up a cheap Plano Pistol Case but the foam is to thick and I may just return
it and get something a bit nicer like a small pelican case with pick and pluck foam,

What are others using?

Thank you

I picked up a small zipper case from Walmart, like a bank bag.  (pictures further down in this thread)

I keep a small stock of various zipper bags (various shapes & sizes) picked up over the years from various sources. Got lucky with a vinyl one that had matching dimensions for length & width and about half again the depth.  I think it originally came as an insert for a cooler.

Another, commercially available, option would be a small canvas tool bag or flat zipper case.  You can find those at places like Sears, Harbor Freight, etc. Add a gallon ziplock for use inside the tool bag if waterproofing might be a consideration during transport and the bag isn't.

I also used a "trim to fit" screen protector sheet that covers the full display area (just in case...).

I'm ashamed to say I'm still using the cardboard box! I asked this same question last year, never did find a good one. If you locate something that works well, please let me know.

^^^^ same.  I use ... my desk.

I should really get a case for it though.

Though it is a bit overkill I use a old SKB pistol case.  Something smaller would be certainly more appropriate but I already had this case.

I have soft cases made for gear by:

Rose's Covers & Cases

Rose Kopp N7HKW, makes beautiful covers and carrying cases for Elecraft radios and related equipment.
Email Rose:  [email protected] for details and pricing.
Tel: 406-560-3738

Thank you for asking about my Elecraft carrying cases.

Here is a URL with photos that will show you some examples

of both cases and covers I've made for others.  Be sure you

see the 50+ photos at:  http://tinyurl.com/7lm3m5

You can read what some of my customers say about my

work at:  http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/7387

             http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/8278

             http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/9272

The outer layer of fabric is a heavy 100% cotton duck.  The

inside lining is a soft polar fleece and there's a one inch layer

of soft polyester batting between the layers as protective

padding.

There is a continuous 1" nylon webbing strap around the sides

and bottom with 1" metal D-rings for attaching the shoulder strap.

The webbing also provides additional support for the radio.  The

K3 (only) can be inserted into the case "face up" or "handle up",

and there are two inside padded flaps under the cover flap that

provide more protection for the radio.  These flaps also have a

strong two-inch Velcro closure.

There is an inside pocket for small items like a power cord and

there is an additional larger pocket under the cover on the outside

front of the case.  These pockets are not suitable for large items

like a microphone, key or power supply, but there are optional

side pockets available that will meet most of these needs. The

pocket under the cover is suitable for a manual and / or logbook.

The cover also has a secure two-inch wide full width TSA - friendly

Velcro closure.

A variety of fabric colors are available, and can be used in any

combination.  See the URL photos for samples. Check with me

before ordering if you have something "unusual" in mind. The fleece

lining can be black, light or dark gray, blue or tan.

As in the case of my K1, K2, K3 and KPA500 dust covers, I can

embroider several lines on the front of the case with the Elecraft

logo, your call, name, etc.  There is no extra cost for any embroidery,

and almost any combination of thread colors is available.  See the

photos #20 and #21 at http://tinyurl.com/7lm3m5 for thread colors.

My home is smoke free, so there's no lingering odor in the fabric.

Pelican 1170 looks to be the smallest size that fits mine. Thoughts?

I think that's the one I was looking at I figures I'd have extra room to put the cables etc in it

I was thinking about a small Pelican case also. The 1170 looks to be best fit. Should be plenty of room for the AA-54 meter, cable & maybe some battery storage.

Hmm, now which color? I think OD Green for me.

ETA: Guess I'll stick with black as they want $20 more for any color other than black!?

But, there can be only one for what is AR-Jedi approved.

I just ordered the black 1170 also. Never used the "Pick-n-Pluck" type foam before. As you mentioned,  the case should be more than enough for intended use.

Orange Pelican 1170 ordered for my RigExpert AA-54.
For some strange reason I seem to be driven to get a Orange Gama-Lid too.

Got mine the other day,  just got around to plucking out the foam for analyzer. It will do nicely, still enough room for batts & USB cable.

Got this bag for, I think, 99 cents at Walmart.

My AA-600 came yesterday.  It is still in the light weight bag that came with it and the box.  Unless I get a different case it will get the foam padded toolbox that I had the MFJ-259 in.  249B and 269 will be sold.  I like this better.  Will be offering them to out club and then on EE if I don't have anyone in the club who wants them.

Dang it, Jup, you are going to cost me more money.

At least it's less than a buck this time.

That zipper bag also holds the manual and USB cable.

I bought three of them, this one for the Rigexpert, and two more in which I keep various adapters, tools, other small items
for my emergency kit with the IC-7200.

Slips neatly under the mounting tray in the SKB case.

I bought a lot of the canvas zip bags on Amazon last year in assorted sizes. I use the small ones for microphones. I store a bunch of stuff in them.  You could store the manual underneath the analyzer in the Pelican case, it has 2 separate layers of foam in bottom. What's the manual for anyway?

I put the manuals and CD under the foam on the bottom for save keeping.

If you are looking for a pelican case, the cheapest place I have found them is by contacting pelican directly. Every time I contact them and they have a distributor quote me it is cheaper than all of the online sites including Ebay. Usually Vanco is the lowest quote. I have purchased quite a few of the larger cases and usually they have free shipping.

Yeah, I keep mine in the original cardboard box. And I don't really have a lot of reason to change.
