I never came close to getting him.

In the four months I've been on the air, I'd only heard one Japanese station ever -- and suddenly I got QSO's with seven this weekend. I'm sure the Asian DX contest helped by getting more stations on the air, but I see them spotted daily and just couldn't hear them before. Also went from no South Africans to three in one weekend.

Thank god I don't have to listen to Tango India 200 India over and over again. Finally caught a slack spot in the pileup.

Patience, grasshopper.

Try working K1N with 30 watts and a wir over a tree when he's running split and you are running a PRC 320!

Yeah, but I bet your rig is set up to do splits.

With the 320 he was working 10 up and my fingers bled.

It's funny how that works, but it does.  I've had numerous similar occasions where I would finally work a country and after that I'd hear them regularly.  It took several months after I got my General license to work a Japanese station but now I work them all the time.  Same with Russian stations.  It took a long time to get the first but after that they are everywhere.  Even rare stations like Svalbard.  It took 17 years to work my first and now I've worked them a half dozen times.

Another thing I've noticed is that rare stations are "Seasonal" (for lack of a better term).  Someone will go TDY it some place like Antarctica or Somalia or Johnston Island or Marshall Islands (all real occurrences for me) and we see them so frequently they become part of the background until they are suddenly gone.  I worked Johnston Island on 20 meters and heard him on several other bands, always with an enormous pileup.  I never bothered trying to get him on other bands because I heard him frequently and really wish I had now ;)  In other words: Get them when the getting is good!

Me too.

My very first time keying up with my brand new callsign was on 10m

I was immediately hooked on HF, and had little interest in VHF. In less than a year, I skipped right past general and got my advanced ticket.

it's great to see it opening again.

@lorazepam

when DX pile-ups get out of control, the DX station may work split.

he will say or send “listening 5 up” or similar

for most HF rigs, this is what you do.

tune to him

hit “A=B” button

take your B vfo, and scroll up 5khz

now go back to your A vfo to hear him

press the “split” button

example

DX is on SSB 14.200 listening 5 up

set A vfo to 14.200 (your receive)
set B vfo to 14.205  ( your transmit)

hot your “split” button

now you can hear the DX clearly without all the callers stepping on him

.

Except for all the guys who don't get it and continue to step all over the DX station on the frequency he is not listening on.

I have head stories that when someone is repeatedly told that someone is listening up and doesn't heed that often times in violation of FCC rules and regulations that a scofflaw will sometimes change his call to the DX call and fool the person walking on the DX station by giving him 5x9 just to get rid of him.

I'm ashamed to say that at least one or two Arfcommers have done this dastardly deed.

When you throw out your call sign add QRP to it. As in AB1CDEQRP.

Technically at 20 watts you are not a true QRP station (5 watts and under)but only an asshole would slight you for it.

I would do that sometimes when I was running the PRC 320 with a random chunk of wire over a tree and ALWAYS when I was running it on the 2.4 meter whip.

I was reading about QRP the other day. It is originally asking if you want me to reduce power. Later on, it was considered anything under 100 watts. Lately it has become 5w or less. I do call qrp, and tell them I have 20w. No one cares, and those calling cq will most times make a few qrp calls.

The rules confuse me.

Some people are reading multiple strings of numbers followed by letters. I don't have any idea wtf it is about. Example:  1624s53m117

I haven't read the rules, but it appears that they are giving out lists of some of the contacts they've made -- callsigns, along with numbers both given and received.

RULES

EDIT: Those lists are called QTC's.

Just give them a signal report and a serial number. I simply write down a number on a piece of scrap paper for every contestant I have a QSO with. First one gets 001, second one gets 002, third one gets 003, etc. I don't bother writing down the number they give me, which is the number of QSO's they've had in the contest up until that point.

This is what I do and I do log it in case someone wants to know that the station hadn't just pulled my call off of QRZ.

Contesting is serious business to those guys and I bet the top guys challenge things.
