In the four months I've been on the air, I'd only heard one Japanese station ever -- and suddenly I got QSO's with seven this weekend. I'm sure the Asian DX contest helped by getting more stations on the air, but I see them spotted daily and just couldn't hear them before. Also went from no South Africans to three in one weekend. |

It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air, that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.

Thank god I don't have to listen to Tango India 200 India over and over again. Finally caught a slack spot in the pileup.

View Quote It's funny how that works, but it does. I've had numerous similar occasions where I would finally work a country and after that I'd hear them regularly. It took several months after I got my General license to work a Japanese station but now I work them all the time. Same with Russian stations. It took a long time to get the first but after that they are everywhere. Even rare stations like Svalbard. It took 17 years to work my first and now I've worked them a half dozen times. Another thing I've noticed is that rare stations are "Seasonal" (for lack of a better term). Someone will go TDY it some place like Antarctica or Somalia or Johnston Island or Marshall Islands (all real occurrences for me) and we see them so frequently they become part of the background until they are suddenly gone. I worked Johnston Island on 20 meters and heard him on several other bands, always with an enormous pileup. I never bothered trying to get him on other bands because I heard him frequently and really wish I had now ;) In other words: Get them when the getting is good! |

My very first QSO was with https://www.qrz.com/db/V73AX Kwajalein Atoll with the Kenwood TS 530 that I bought from an older guy in our local radio club for $450 that came with a NIB Hustler 6BTV antenna. Still have both and fire up the Kenwood several times a year. |

I do call qrp, and tell them I have 20w. No one cares, and those calling cq will most times make a few qrp calls. |
