Worked a ZL1 in New Zealand on batteries tonight, running 40 watts into inverted V.
First legit CW contact in.... a lot of years. Nervous fist, and SLOOOOW haha. Dont know if ZL was running power or not, sent him RST 599, I think he gave me rst 559. Alaska to New Zealand with 40 watts and a wire up a tree is what RADIO is all about for me. |

View Quote Tried him several times and couldn’t get through. He faded from here but I could still hear half the stations still working him. He was a lot stronger here 45m ago. I was shoveling in bread pudding with rum hard sauce about then and calling in between bites. Conditions getting worse so I shut down and came upstairs. correction I was working a different Guadalupe station on 20m. Edit, maybe a contest teammate working the other band? |

Right now (04/09/21 between 1900 and 1910Z) on 20 meter FT8 there were:
Canada 6 stations, England 2 stations, Germany 2 stations, Romania 1 station, Greece 2 stations, Italy 2 stations, Belgium 1 station, Portugal 1 station, France 1 station, Spain 3 stations, Mexico 1 station, Netherlands 1 station, Domican Republic 1 station, Cuba 1 station, Puerto Rico 1 station, Alaska 1 station, North Macedonia 1 station, Lebanon 1 station, Azores 1 station, Cyprus 1 station, USA - I lost count. All calling CQ at more or less the same time. It's actually pretty slow right now, there are places on the band that aren't painted red on the waterfall (meaning one or more very powerful stations). Most days around this time I can't find a relatively quiet slot to slide into. Edit - 1953Z ... Add Turkey, Poland, European Russia, Canary Islands, Venezuela, Colombia, Sicily, Hungary, Ireland, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, and Denmark. Some of these are working other stations though, and not calling CQ. Edit - 2044Z ... Add US Virgin Islands, Croatia, Jamaica, Bosnia-Herzegovina. You're probably starting to get the idea that this mode is a DX gold mine. In the few weeks I've been using it I've noticed that it has gotten extremely crowded at times. |

It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air, that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.
