All,
I recently purchased a  anytone 588uv radio and would like to ask the more experienced out there what they can recommend for a 2meter 70cm mobile radio antenna?TX is max 50watt. New to the hobby.

Thanks,
JJ

OK, I'll warn you before all the other messages come after this.

You're going to hear about NMO mounts. The universal advice is put a in-metal NMO mount in.

It's good advice.

Once you have that, I'd suggest a NMO mount Diamond. If you have a garage and clearance is an
issue, you could go short like a NR72BNMO, but if it's not an issue you'll be much better off with
a NR770HBNMO, which is taller and has slightly more gain.

Other folks will say Larsen or Comet, and they're fine too. As long as they're NMO.

Wideband on VHF…only good for 440-450 MHz on UHF (I even called Dick Austin and asked him if the antenna could get any more wide banded…he didn't think he could reliably replicate any wideband modification).

I had a CA2X4SR pull the mount out of the roof when I hit a tree I didn't see in the middle of the night (way too stiff to be mounted on the roof). As advertised though, shoots under 1.5:1 SWR from 136-175 MHz and 420-470 MHz).

Larsen 2/70 is a very hard antenna to beat. Low stress on the mount and even does okay out of the ham bands (not perfect but for instance it can pull off under a 3:1 SWR on GMRS).

I hardly ever use UHF. When I do the hills around here hurt my signal more than gain will help it so that is not a concern for me. I also don't do GMRS or LMR so none of those have an effect on me.

If UHF was a concern I am sure there are other fine antennas, but the durability and size of the 500c make up for the lack of bandwidth of UHF.

Funny, my first impression is that dhs would consider that to be a possible EMP weapon and pull you over regularly.

Diamond Antenna NR770HBNMO

Got one from gigaparts for a road trip last week for 64$ shipped.  I have two of these.

I've been very happy with the component quality and performance of my Comet SBB-5 dual band antenna. Comet also makes an NMO version called the SBB-5NMO.

Manufacturer Link

$53.95 at GigaParts LINK

This particular pic shows my SBB-25 mono bander taken during the original install LINK, but my upgraded SBB-5 uses the same mount.

It was installed in March 2010 and I've had no issues whatsoever

Comet SBB 2, 5 or 7. Just pick the largest of those you can.

I currently run a Diamond CR627B, but that also has 6 Meter.  Good antenna., folds down for tight overheads.

I use an Opek AM-751 pickup stake hole mount.
