thanks all. Did some calling there for 5-10 min and got called back upstairs. Good news is the house didn't seem to be buzzing.

Wow! The end fed rain gutter is working pretty danged good! Grounded to the window bunker right next to the gutter, but no conterpoise. She tunes up immediately on 17, 20, 40, and 80m. Worked my first contacts last night--Russia and Bulgaria, on 20m and London on 17m this afternoon.
I suspect it might be somewhat directional--aluminum siding.
